Mix all dry ingredients before adding liquids?

I finally got around to watching RR's DVD featuring Roadkill, and Roadkill says he mixes his water with vermiculite before adding the BRF - he says it coats the verm better. As long as I've been old enough to follow a food recipe you always mix the dry ingredients together, then add any liquids? Just curious, how many people out there make their cakes adding water last vs. verm+water then BRF last?

I always mixed the vermiculite and BRF together before adding the water. I suppose it doesn't make much difference.

it really does make a difference. if you mix your drys first and then add water you'll have ALOT less clumping

When i made my first batches, i added the water to the vermiculite first using the method where to get the right water amount when i scrape some verm to reveal the bottom of the bowl there should be a little water in the bowl, then add the flour, i got alot of clumping then discovered that my mix was a little wet.
Next time i added the verm and brf mixed together then started adding water. found that i got a much better mix

It's like "Home Economics 101", lol...
When cooking you always mix the dry ingredients together separately from the liquid ingredients you've already mixed together. The only time you'll see that formula deviate is when you need a specific type of reaction/mixture to form first before you move on to the next step.

When baking bread, I always mix dry ingredients first. When making bulk substrates, I always mix dry ingredients first. In fact, when making brf cakes I always mix dry ingredients first. Roadkill mixes the water and the verm, and then adds the brown rice flour slowly later, which works well also. Not everyone does things the same. There was/is no clumping in RK's jars. RR

It is much easier to tell how much water the verm will hold when you add the water to the verm first.
Some verm I've used can only soak up the 1/4 cup, some verm can soak up the "maximum fruiting" 60cc, and this last verm I've got ahold of is holding even more than that.
I prefer the RK method.

Thats a very good point, on my next jars i am gonna try adding the water again to the verm first and get it to capacity then slow add the flour while mixing.

hmm.. i actually mixed the dry's first then added water. i found that to become quite pasty after i mixed in the 1/4cup brf with 1/4 cup water and 2/3 cup verm recipe. but in that one you tube vid it shows to mix the water with the verm then add flour? not sure. i'm having trouble finding brown rice four. would regular rice flour work?

I use "Mahatma Brown Rice" even though its not organic. I just rinse first. Never had problems before. I have never been to a grocery store that didn't have it.
