weak fruiting
    #7438847 - 09/21/07 11:31 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

well ive just reccently switched to grains and was casing it with moisture control. I have 1 1/2 inches of wbs as my substrate and about 1/2 inch of moisture control. I put just enough casing layer to completely cover the substrate.

My humidity is constantly at 96%-99% rH so I know its not a humidity or FAE problem.

Should I try a thicker substrate? And do the future flushes for this casing hold a better future than this 1st flush? I think I may have fruited it a bit prematurely.

i have not done any casings but have done a little bit of reading on teh subject. I think ur humidity may be too high. Cakes need 95%-100% casings as far as i know don't need it to be as high as moisture is held in the casing layer. but don't quote me on that

future flushes usually yield less fruits but bigger. U could try dunking before ur next flush (though i am unsure on how to dunk a casing)

What did you get from ur first flush??

if i were you i would make it thicker next time, and fruiting it early could be part of the problem to though, and if its flushing then your on the right track just make a few changes next time

1. thicker substrate
2. be patient
3. your RH is fine too.

if you don't mind my asking how does that mean its not an FAE problem... what makes you so sure? how often do you fan or what are you using for FAE....

what do you mean by weak fruiting? weak as in a weak pinset, or weak as in small fruits?

Yeah and I run a coolmist 24 hours per day bringing constant FAE. I also remove the casings every day just to allow some additional fresh air.

I think I agree with whoever said I might have fruited it prematurely. Next time I will be more patient.

And by weak, I mean both weak pinset (which I think refers to above) and then my fruits were pretty short. Strain was Arcadian Coast.

im not an expert man but i spend alot of time on here reading and it always seems like when people have the right growing conditions and they still get shitty pinsets its because they fruited to early, next time try waiting a week after full colonization before you fruit...i know its tough waiting that long but if it means better yields then its definately worth it IMO.

well when your casings start drying out during flushes that extra 10% humidity helps.
