Tichocereus x Huasca cristata-photo added.

Camera batteries dead but I got a Tichocereus x Huasca cristata at Lowe's the other day. At the bottom it has some spots that look like rot and discolor but the top is firm and healthy. Should I cut out the bad spots and try to re-root? Or... mabey try to graft to a Panchoi ? not so good at grafting tho and don't wanna lose it. I'll post pics tomorrow. It was actually labeled Tichocereus x Huasca cristata!

it depends how bad the rot, discoloration is. it it is not rotting anymore then you are fine but if it is still soft/mushy then you will either need to cut it out or graft.
either way you should replant in sterilized cactus soil because the rotting was prolly caused by over watering by the "experts" at Lowe's that water them every day like a spider plant,

Spots aren't bad unless they're soft.

i dont understand the description of the specimen really... probably a t.huasca hybridised with another trich, i guess
if the spots are soft/mushy then surgery will probably be required... if not, then leave it as it is...

Well still no batteries for camera but the rot was alot more abundant than I had originally thought. Either that or it spread really fast over the weekend. I cut off the bottom 3 inches of the cactus thinking surely all the infected areas would be gone, but the center of the cactus had a black rot that went almost to the top of the plant. Now I am left with about a 1 inch tall cactus and had to spoon out another .5 inches of the center that was still affected. I know I really need to post pics, but it's not totally flat on the bottom where I cut it as I had to spoon out the center rot about .5 inches deep. Think it's a goner?

why are you dusting it with anything???
just cut it and let it callous would be the best best imo

there is no need for it on cacti and putting anything on a wet cactus cant be good at all,
cactus = just let it callous

i dont think it will do much harm, might even help it dry and callous a bit faster but no real need for it... cactus cuttings throw roots in search of water, simple as that.

personally id leave it at that, and hope for the best... lets say 50/50 on it spreading... put it cut side up in a sunny spot or under a light if u have one, to help it dry fast...

ok, we shall see.... and I do think the powdered hormone is actually speeding up the callousing process. It's drying quite fast. Not gonna make it to Lowe's today, but I'll try to get over there tomorrow and pick up the other 2 if they are still there and not dead yet. uarewotueat, of course has first dibs on it, although if is infected with this pathogen as well, I would be scared that it would be a ball of mush when it arrived.

Is there nothing I can apply to the bottom to stop the spread, kinda like a cacti antibiotic? hydrogen peroxide??

alot of people actually dust their cuts with sulphur powder... its a good anti-fungal.
i used it once or twice on rotting specimens... didnt save them though...

It's gone..R.I.P. the other's at Lowe's where dead or dying too Although they had a new batch of "Echinopsis" spp. cristatas that looked healthy none had the golden spines of the huasca. Plus the species wasn't labeled, and this batch is Echinopsis, I wonder if they just now changed their labeling system..
