Rye flour a good substitute for BRF?

I want to Wally-World today, in search of BRF. I found that they had rye flour, but not the BRF. Will this work? I saw a lot of mycologists on here use rye grains. Please help a new mycologist out.

yes, it'll work. but not in the proportions listed for brf.
if memory serves correctly, you need either less rye flour or more water.

BRF can be hard to find. Last time I did the cakes tek, I ended up just buying some brown rice and grinding it up in a coffee grinder. Because really, that's all BRF is, finely ground brown rice. So if you can't find any flour, or can't figure out how much rye flour to use, that's what I would suggest.

Makes sense. If I had to guess, I would say MORE water, as the rye seems to be more dry than the brown rice. But what do I know? Anyone on else want to chime in? I'm always happy to take advice from experts.

OK, I bought the brown rice as well. What's a coffee grinder look like?

Rye grain contains bacterial endospores which are still present in the flour.
If you use rye flour you need to use a pressure cooker instead of a steamer.
(or so I have been told by the pros)

"I may have thrown my blender out. "
a) why would you do that? b) a coffee grinder isn't a blender. Just look for one in the small appliance section in any store that has one (target, wal-mart, sears, ect). You can even find them in supermarkets.

You couldn't even make flour out of BR using a blender..they would just sit at the bottom underneath the spinning blades. My $5 Mr. Coffee grinder from a thrift store works WONDERFULLY.

I've only known them as a coffee GRINDER, never a coffee blender.

I got a new mixer, and I don't think it came with a blender attachment like the old one had. I may have pitched it. I'll take a look at Wal-Mart, next week.

sorry, that is flat wrong. i used to make my BRF with my blender. it eventually burned out because of it, and it didn't flour it 100%, but it will work nonetheless.

Hmm, I'll look around for the blender then, lol. If not, it looks like around $20 or so for one at Wal-Mart. I probably won't go get one until Monday or Tuesday though: I've already gone to two of them today.

if you're going to go out and buy a blender - don't. spend the money on a coffee grinder. a blender will work, but the coffee grinder will make a much finer flour and should last longer than the blender also.

You could probably moisten the grains before putting them in a normal blender so it would grind up more easily.
