I found a use for my old PF jars.

I have 4 cases of pint tapered jars I from back in the day when I first started growing. I used the PF tek at first but graduated to WBS and grain transfer. I know the PF tek calls for 1/2 pint but all I could find was pint so I ended up using them instead. Which in my opinion worked better; more mushrooms out of the same syringe. Anyway I didn't know what to do with these jars and was planning on putting them out with the recycling. Than I had a brainstorm. Every time it's time to case I piss around with bags sterilizing the casing mix. I have always found this to be a pain in the ass because I always end up making either too much or too little and the bags don't fit well into my glove box. So I bought some fresh unused ball lids and will effectively "can" my casing mix in these jars. That way I'll have pre sterilized casing soil ready to go in pre-measured hermetically sealed jars any time the bird seed is fully colonized. Larger jars might serve this purpose better but I don't have any to spare.

Lots of us have been doing this for quite a while now. I know HippieChick will sterlize her casing jars with good results. I, personally, prefer to pasteurize. Try either method.
I put the jars in the PC like normal with the WEIGHT OFF. Put on full heat until steam begins to escape and continues to do so for no more than a couple minutes. Let sit for a half hour. Reapply full heat as before until steam escapes for another few moments. Let cool until ready for use.
And by the way, I would recommend prepping a few extra jars now for patching later!

That's the plan. I'm going to fill all 4 cases worth and have them set aside on a shelf ready to go in advance. Like a cabinet full of home made preserves. I've pasteurized before but seem to have less contamination problems throwing them in the All American. I usually don't patch unless there's a tray that has some real drastic uneven growth. Generally they get cased, covered in foil, and go into the incubator for a few days. After that, straight into the fruiting chamber. But I do fill in the holes left after harvesting flushes, that's a must.
