Had she misstepped one little bit, the police would have justifiably filled her with bullets, and the chorus of police brutality would have started their song once again.

MIT Student Arrested With Fake Bomb
By GLEN JOHNSON – 45 minutes ago
BOSTON (AP) — An MIT student wearing what turned out to be a fake bomb was arrested at gunpoint Friday at Logan International Airport and later claimed it was artwork, officials said.
Star Simpson, 19, had a computer circuit board and wiring in plain view over a black hooded sweatshirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport.
"She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day," Pare said at a news conference. "She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it."
Simpson was charged with disturbing the peace and possessing a hoax device. A not guilty plea was entered for her and she was released on $750 bail.
During the hearing, Simpson smiled as she entered wearing a T-shirt and sandals. After she posted bail, she left in a taxi with a man who identified himself as her boyfriend, but neither would answer more questions from reporters.
Prosecutor Wayne Margolis had requested $5,000 bail, saying Simpson showed a total disregard for the situation she was in — an airport after the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Ross Schreiber, who was appointed to represent Simpson, said she was not a risk to flee, was a good student with no prior convictions and she cooperated with authorities.
He said she had gone to the airport to meet her boyfriend. "She was there for legitimate purposes," Schreiber said.
Simpson was "extremely lucky she followed the instructions or deadly force would have been used," Pare said. "She's lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue."
Simpson is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology sophomore from Hawaii, officials said.
The battery-powered rectangular device had nine flashing lights, and Simpson had Play-Doh in her hands, Pare said.
The phrases "Socket to me" and "Course VI" were written on the back of her sweatshirt, which authorities displayed to the media. Course VI appears to refer to MIT's major of electrical engineering and computer science.
Simpson was a member of MIT's swimming and diving team in 2006, according to the team's Web site, which lists her hometown as Kihei, Hawaii. MIT spokeswoman Patti Richards said aside from confirming she was a student, the school did not have any comment.
She was arrested about 8 a.m. outside Terminal C, home to United Airlines, Jet Blue and other carriers.
A Massachusetts Port Authority staffer manning an information booth in the terminal became suspicious when Simpson — wearing the device — approached to ask about an incoming flight, Pare said. Simpson then walked outside, and the staffer notified a nearby trooper.
The trooper, joined by others with submachine guns, confronted her at a traffic island in front of the terminal.
"She was immediately told to stop, to raise her hands and not to make any movement, so we could observe all her movements to see if she was trying to trip any type of device," Pare said. "Had she not followed the protocol, we might have used deadly force."
Pare said Simpson took a subway to the airport, but he was not sure if she had the device on at that time.
The major praised the booth attendant, but said the incident is a reminder of the terrorism threat confronting the civil aviation system. Two of the four passenger jets hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001, took off from Logan.
The city was the focus of a major security scare Jan. 31 when dozens of battery-powered devices were discovered in various locations. Bomb squads were deployed and some transportation links were closed temporarily. They turned out to be a promotion for the Cartoon Network.

So someone straps a motherboard to themselves and all of a sudden they're a terrorist? When will people stop using 9/11 to scare people into fitting into the crowd.

This kind of reminds me of Chris Burden, the performance artist that crucified himself to a VW bug and tricked his friend into shooting him all for art's sake.
http://arted.osu.edu/160/14_Burden.php
What's really funny is now Burden is an art teacher. He had a student show up to his class one day with a gun loaded with blanks. The student walked in and showed off the gun to the class and then ran out of the class and shot it off trying to trick everyone into thinking he had killed himself.
What's really funny is that Burden condemned the student... which is ironic considering all the shit HE pulled in the 70's

So bombs look like circuit boards now?
What a paranoid society we live in these days. Of course the usual suspects of this board will all agree that she had it coming. They love to suck uncle sams dick out in the open to show how they are so patriotic.

Had what coming? She got arrested for disturbing the peace and having a hoax device. She intended to disturb the peace and deliberately made a fake bomb for that purpose. Circuit boards, wires and imitation C4. Yup, nothing there move along, move along. If she hadn't obeyed the cops, like several other fools chose not to do, she might well be dead and everybody would feel bad for her. A little. Like the idiots who pull toy guns on cops and get shot.
Paranoid? I don't think so. Look up the word.Quote:

I'll let the person to whom that comment was directed respond for himself... but I want to unequivocally state that, in my case (& I'm guessing others here feel the same way), I am the guardian, protector & sole owner of my own freedom; not the police, not the military, not any judges, & definitely not any politicians.
what happens when the other guy is bigger or has friends or weapons?

Sounds like you're talking about the cops/feds... 'cuz they're the only people who fit that description that I have to worry about violating my freedom.
have you ever visited economically depressed areas or do you just read about them?

Ok, so that thing is supposed to look like a bomb ?
Omfg, people are so stupid.
It reminds me of my friend who got problems with the cops : One day, we were near the door of the school shooting a movie for one of our classes, my friend had a gun in his hand pointing in the air, he was yelling his speech (which was : WATCH OUT FOR THE ALIENS), another friend held a mic in the air, I was walking around the guy with the gun with the camera, and another guy was disguised as an alien dancing around us. Before we knew it, someone had saw the gun and has called the cops on us, six of them arrived in car, open their door and while keeping us at gunpoint they yell to us to get on the ground, we were all confused and then a cops jumped on my friend and threw him on the ground, my friend has his face slamed on the ciment. I never saw so many suprised face, the people that were looking at us shooting the film from a couple of meters were astonished.
People need to think and use their brain, if the bastard that called the cops had at least look and analysed the situation, he would have realised the situation was ridiculus and that it was a movie. Media scare so much the people that when something special or a little out of the ordinary is happening, they immediately call the cops out of fear.
We were charged with community services and the guy with the gun spent 1 day in court explaining the situation. They talked about us on the local news and they said that the gun was a real gun unloaded, which was total bullshit, it was a blue plastic gun flashing with light and doing "ggGRRRRRR" when activated.
Sorry, I had to tell this story, since this day I listen to news while laughing and feeling sorry for the people they talk of.

I can't believe this. Some nerd wears part of a computer on herself and everyone thinks she is a criminal?
You guys need to get out more/pull the sticks out of your butts. Sounds like she is a just some sort of a tech nerd with esoteric fashion sense. I don't see how a circuit board and blinking lights signals any sort of bomb. I'm glad the cops were careful enough to check it out, but I don't see what law the girl was breaking.
I wonder what would happen if a renaissance fair nerd showed up at an airport with a fake javelin? Probably get his sorry ass tazed.

You have somebody with a circuit board tied to their chest, with numbers that are counting down, and wires that go into a brick of putty in her hands, inside an airport. What is your first thought? Mine certainly isn't "MIT student wearing art".
Had she lacked the putty in her hands, then I might be a little less critical... but with that, there is little doubt that her intent was to simulate an explosive device.
