How to create a meteor shower?
    #7436326 - 09/21/07 12:07 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

From what I understand, when we see a meteor shower, what we are seeing are particles of sand and dust that were left behind by a passing comet or asteroid long ago. I think that these particles are usually not moving, and somewhat stable in their location in space.

Now, it would seem to me that If someone was to launch a rocket full of sand into the atmosphere and somehow spread the sand into space, that they could create a meteor shower.

Or is this plan completely ignoring several natural laws, and laws of physics that would make such a plan, completely in-feasible.

A small bomb on a large enough rocket might do it.

The thing you have to remember is that those particles of sand are moving really fast when they hit the atmosphere. Speeds in excess of 70km/s are possible with head on collisions. I don't know that if you just spread sand in the atmosphere it will have enough energy to make a meteor.

Nope, the nastty thing called terminal velocity gets in the way here.

The meteors light up because they hit the atmosphere at several km a second.

However, there's no reason why you couldn't actually do that. You could fire a rocket high up above the atmosphere, set off a charge of HMX (detonates 9 km/sec) in the top and shoot a payload of lead shot towards earth at over 5 kilometers per second, a speed initially only increasing because of gravity.

At lower speeds you could spread out balls that consist of magnesium metal alloyed with barium and strontium and copper to produce the usual fireworks colors white, green, red and blue when these metal balls chemically burn off by the frictional heat generated by their fall.

This could be used to make a cosmic firework that can be seen across vast areas.

You could think of taking an old nuclear MX missile and replacing the 10 MIRV warheads with smaller rockets that fly out in a flower pattern, raining down those metallic balls so that they leave a trail of multicolored comets for miles and miles.
If you think thats dumb - well it sure is less dumb than loading it with nukes and launching it against our fellow man.

Space fireworks - I'm all for it! Fireworks displays spread joy among people, and its an excellent way to decommission nuclear missiles left over from the Cold War. Screw off the warhead and screw on the peacehead

okay, so its doabole, assuming someone could actually get away with launching a rocket laden with explosives into the atmosphere......

whats the minimum cost?

A couple of millions at least, unless you can get a decommissioned ICBM.

I saw a couple of them down at the local swap meet :smirk:

a coupple of million.....

you know, someone might actually pay up to $5 Million to have their own personally engineered meteor shower. you could even theoretically manage the scatter of the particles to have the meteor's spell out things or images in the sky... Imagine being proposed to with "marry me" being spelled out in the sky followed by an hour long brilliant meteor shower raining down in your lovers favorite colors......

What are the ramifications of burning up various chemicals in our atmosphere?

not too severe i would imagine, equal to a small percentage of the pollution caused by an individual on a yearly basis.....

I've thought of this too.  You'd have to talk a pretty rich guy into financing it I imagine.  It's not something you could sell either, unless there was a marketing campaign behind it "this engineered meteor shower is brought to you by Comcast, number 1 in digital cable".

It would be sweet though...streaks of red and green and silver and blue crossing the sky every second.  Big releases of hundreds of them setting fire to the night sky.  Make sure the shroomery folk are forewarned so they can save a little something for the show

Man made metor shower. Hmmmm, I like it! Its always pretty immpressive when something we put into space comes back down in a ball of fire. Remember the Shuttle Columbia images? And there was that Russian rocket that burned up over Denver earlier this year. A news helicopter just happened to catch it.
