Bill Hicks... some random thoughts about a famous quote by him....

----- Recently, the Comedian Bill Hicks caught my attention... I was thinking about his thoughts here:
---- “The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly colored and it's very loud and its fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride..." And we... kill those people.”
------ I think it's an interesting paragraph. I think Bill is onto something with those thoughts. To understand him I think you really need to step back from being a human as much as you can… and just look from the 3rd person, its then you can see what Bill is really saying. ------- Before I go on, I always try to hold onto myself. I am trying to make sure I am able to remain objective and not TOO idealistic and "rebellious" in a sense, at least I hope I can see always both sides of my thoughts clearly, in a sense.
-------- Bill starts by saying the world is like a ride. I think that is a crucial part of a particular way to cope with existence on this planet. It can be contrasted with the opposite, being, unable to see the true “comedy” (in a sense) of existence… meaning those who are totally wrapped up with being purely influenced by society. I find his part mentioning choice arbitrary, saying that we at some point we chose to become physically alive. Perhaps he is right, perhaps he is not. But I don’t really concern myself with that detail too much. The point of these thoughts isn’t really dependent of whether or not we chose to come into this reality.
-------- Bill then says that we are taken on a ride, amazed by its glory and intensity. No doubt any person can understand that. Life is all we have really known. Our reality is truly our home and comfort. I think it is impossible to really understand outside of it. Can’t be conscious of something we haven’t perceived without some sort of sensory transaction (interesting that we even inquire about such unknown things, it’s like an extension of seeing death and wondering where you go, pretty fundamental). So yes, the game of life is a very distracting one, at least when you are “obsessed” with it.
-------- Then Bill says that at some point, some of us start to question our existence, our place in reality as we know it. It’s interesting that humans have the ability to wonder about such things, sure doesn’t seem all that logical, in a sense I think the people that shake their heads at people that truly question reality don’t want to let themselves foster such un-pragmatic and lofty ideals.
-------- Thus Bill says that the people that who see the world as a ride try to tell everyone that life is like a ride and that we don’t need to worry, obsess, and be scared about life. Bill ends his thoughts by saying that we kill those people. I am sure there are a few decent examples of that, don’t want to go there now. But not only has that happened, but perhaps more importantly, many of us kill those very ideas in ourselves, never wanting to accept such “radical” thoughts. Thoughts that rattle all that we have invested in and accepted. It is tempting to defer the problems of human existence. But, I think its valuable to confront it... have to at some point.
-------- Now, on the flip side, all the points of Bill’s thoughts are great and all. It makes sense. But really, how do you then live? I can’t say I think utopia will ever be possible. That being, I don’t think everyone (or enough) people will fully accept those ideals. Plus, evil things happen. I don’t think our physical existences can… well exist… without bad things happening. Also, there is merit to the condition that perhaps man needs direction and control…
-------- But, I suppose the condition of our race is also what makes it beautiful. I am beginning to think that yes, it’s good to keep in mind the many possibilities of our orgins and where we are going. But I think it crucial to accept many things about our existence. In a sense we just need to go with it. The hope is that we can truly appreciate our circumstances and the people around us. Hopefully that makes sense; pretty sad that we don’t seem to see that at all or enough.
-------- So, yeah these ideas can go much further… on and on, not enough time for that right now.
-- tear it apart... heh

You know, I didn't want to come to this fucking planet. I was checking it out with a friend, from a distance, and we kinda sniffed it over and said to eachother, "these fuckers are dangerously stupid and deluded." Kinda like scientologists. And we were repelled by the stupidity. We could see that the experience would be very interesting, but we didn't want anything to do with humans.
And we thought that was that. My friend went off to check out some other planet, and just as I was about to follow her I took one last look at earth, really looked at it, and into it. And I began to see the infinite possibilities stretching out in every direction. And one of the...beings who was hanging around outside, came over to me and tried to sell me on the experience, giving me the hard sell. I knew better than to believe anything he had to say, but as I perceived more of the planet I saw that despite all the bullshit associated with earth-life, the beings who oversaw the planet had disabled Infinite Hatred. (I can't quite explain what Infinite Hatred is, but it basically makes for a hell-planet.) At that point I realized the whole thing was more akin to a cheesy amusement park than anything truly terrifying.
I made a mental note not to buy into any of the bullshit very seriously, and dived in. After it was too late, I remembered my friend: I had forgotten to tell her I was going in.
So here I am on the planet of the Stupid People. I let myself get sucked in against my better judgement. I was right to be dubious. Earth is beautiful, but the people are stone cold stupid. One small example: I live in a country with crumbling infrastructure and chronically underfunded education which spends exorbitant sums to occupy a desert halfway around the world for no appreciably sane reason. And it's all run by a smirking chimpanzee who believes that god is a huge, gaseous invertebrate with nothing better to do than to spend eternity torturing people who don't believe in his religion, as Robert Anton Wilson put it.
At least it's not a total bad trip. I can ride this one out. I can enjoy my time here and make the most of it. But when this one is over, I'm leaving this shithole. And my friend is gonna say, "What the FUCK were you thinking, going in there?" Hell if I know. It was a dumb idea.

The weird part is, I truly believe that. I'd been going around for years bitching about "how did I end up on Stupid Planet?" Then, during a period where I was doing a lot of deep meditation and attempting to lucid dream, I had a strange dream where I re-lived everything described above. Suddenly it all made sense. Suddenly I knew that the only thing I could do was ding-a-ding dang my dang long ling long.
