wait time

So I know that the average time to see mycelium growth is normally 3-5 days sometimes up to a week, but it's been nearly two weeks and out of ten jars only one has about a quarter inch of mycelium. Should I just wait? Do you think the jars are still viable? Could there have been a problem with the spores?

2 weeks and not even a hint of mycellium? They might have a bacterial infection, or you could have inoculated while the jars were to hot killing the spores.

Sometimes weird shit just happens!
How did you aquire the spores? Did you get them from a trustworthy company (shroomery sponsored)?
Two weeks is quite a long time. I don't really think there's any chance.
As has been said earlier, heat could have killed the spores if you inoculated the jars too early after pc-ing. If there's no sign of contamination, then, well, obviously, they aren't contaminated, so there just must be something wrong with the spores.

I got the spores from Hawks Eye. The first batch I inoculated about 5 hours after sterilization and the second was well after that. Both times the jars and pot and water inside the pot were cold to the touch. There's no signs of contams. ugh..

If there is growth in one or two but not very prolific growth, I would not blame the spores. I would check into ensuring you have the proper moisture content. What type of substrate/spawn are you using?
At this point, even if they all spontaneously busted into growth, they will have used a good portion of the substrates nutrients after all that time. I doubt they make it to 100% colonization before contamination sets in. However, there is no reason to throw them away just yet. It doesn't hurt to ride it out and hope for the best.

5 hours sounds way too close to be cutting it. I suggest leaving it out overnight for 8-12 hours, but I'm not sure if after 5 hours the INSIDE of the cake would be cool enough. Remember, even if the outside is cool, the inside builds up eat (Earth's core effect?)

Basically I think the goal is to have enough water in your medium so that it is saturated but there isn't water visible against the glass or pooling or anything like that. Don't quote me on it though!

Hmm well I thought I had plenty of water but at this point I would imagine that some of it may be gone. Is it advisable to add more water at this point? Also has anyone else had a similar situation?

If you're only four days just give it some time. I am towards the end of my first grow and I also incubated my jars in my closet in a shoe box with a blanket/towel on top of them. My temps were 78-80F, and they all colonized fine. some took two weeks to fully colonize while some others took almost three weeks. You should be good!

I would just add like 10cc...2 cc of Distilled or if you have good tap water, too each jar...thats just me though
yeah 5 hours seem way too early...should have waited until the PC and jars have cooled

definitely think 5 hours after pc was too close. you could try injecting a cc or so of sterilized water and loosening your lids a touch but after two weeks i might start another batch.

You shouldn't really ever introduce water to jars after the fact. It's all about getting the moisture content right in the first place. What kind of substrate do you have in these jars?

Another update: The first jar with mycelium is about halfway colonized now and another jar has started. So it has been a very rough start but I might yet get something out of this.
