Wheat straw available in Houston

I was at Party Boy yesterday (I-10 and Studemont, look for the giant sign and inflatable pumpkin or whatever is out there this year), and found 3lb bales of wheat straw, pretty much already cut into small pieces, for a whopping $8 a bale. They are selling it for halloween and fall decoration, or what have you, but I figured I could use it to grow oysters or cubes...
I can't find it locally anywhere, as the Texas gulf coast doesn't produce any grain other than rice, and rice straw is only available in limited supply at certain times of the year.
If anyone has a better source for straw in this area, please contribute to this thread. Otherwise, this is the only game in town as far as I know (unless Walmart starts carrying the stuff). I've checked the feed stores and they don't have it. I think the only other source is hobby stores. I might try Garden Ridge and see if they carry it. They may carry it seasonally like this too, as they tend to have a ton of halloween decorations at this time of year.
Regardless of the price, I bought 3 bales. That should carry me through the next few months.

Go to a feed store. I know they're all over that area. You'll get a fifty to sixty pound bale for five dollars. RR

RR, I've tried feed stores all over here. They don't make straw here, so they don't carry it. The only grain grown in the coastal areas here is rice, and rice straw is only available occasionally.
North TX is a different story. I have found north Texas growers selling it via online ads, but it's way too far for me to go get it, or have one bale shipped.

they all eat hay around here, diablo, not straw. hay, coastal grass, etc is all thats to be had in south texas. there is a straw farmer in seguin that i know of though.
seriously, calling feed stores in south texas warrants "straw? naw, plenty of hay though or <insert other grass>"

It's the same plant. Hay comes from the top, straw from the bottom. Hay has the seeds in it so is better for animal feed. Straw does not, so is better for the floor of your stable or for your chickens to roost in(or mushrooms to colonize). I'll bet if you check, it's there. Farmers need it year around. RR

No, they aren't the same plant. Hay is made from alfalfa, clover or other grasses and is harvested and dried primarily as food for animals.
Straw is the leftover portion of wheat, rye, barley, rice or other grains which is left after the grains themselves are cut from the tops of the stalks. The farmers cut the stalks down in a second passing to make straw.
We don't grow grains in south Texas or the coastal plains, other than rice. We therefore don't get straw in our feed stores.
I could post the link from the google search, but if you just search "hay straw difference", you'll get several explanations of the difference.

again, straw is not available in this part of the state of Texas.
there is nobody to buy it in bulk from.
there is nowhere to obtain it from, except for the places I have mentioned... hobby and craft stores.

I live in the Houston area and I actually got a little excited reading the topic of the thread.. I thought you might be giving away a good straw source in this area.
I have called many feed stores and none carry straw. All you will find is coastal hay. I've done a few grows with straight coastal hay that went well,, you have to be careful when you buy it because sometimes it will have so many seeds its not worth messing with. Manure from hay fed horses and cows works well also.
I can tell you that hobby stores do carry straw. I get my minibales from hobbylobby in humble and its much cheaper than 8 dollars.
Maybe with straw construction becoming more and more popular, it may become available in hardware stores as a building material, but until then we will be strawless in Houston.

yeah, sorry to get your hopes up. I hadn't been able to find it anywhere, but I hadn't looked at Garden Ridge or Hobby Lobby yet.
How big are the bales you buy there?
