mycelium or something else?

Ok,about a week ago,I inoculated A wbs jar with about 10 big ass dark prints, threw it in the closet, and fogot about it.Well, much to my surprise,I woke up this morning, and checked on it,and now I have a white fluffy substance taking over the whole jar.Is this mycelium,or could it be cobweb. It doesn't look like a cowbweb, and it looks like fluffy clouds.Anyone know if this is mycelium or not?[image]http:// [/image][image]http:// [/image]

from what I learned that means theres too much water in it if it looks like a paste...I got 5 pf jars and its in layers....1 layer about 2 inches down from top to bottom is regular mycelial growth...2nd level about 3 inches down is Extremely Overlayed Rizomorphic mycelium growth. 3rd layer from the bottom and the rest is a 25% Rizo and the rest is a THICK PASTE

I have actually heard (and had gotten myself) that wbs can grow a white mold if not prepared properly, fermented, ect. In my case, I had a jar of wbs (that I had never even inoculated) that had sat on my shelf for 1-2 weeks. After that time I saw some white fluffy growth that looked a lot like mycelium, but it actually wasn't...
Hopefully in your case it's not a contam, and since you say you used 10 spore prints to innoc, it could just be very healthy mycelium. In my case the mold didn't actually spread very fast, like cobweb would or even trich or one of those other contams, but it was really slow. Just keep an eye on it and wait for other's inputs on this before you make any rational decisions.

Ok,I'm so excited that this actually worked!my jar turned out to be mycelium after all,and let me tell you,you do not need a pressure cooker,or a spore syringe for that matter. What I did was soak wbs for 2 days, and then I strained it real good, and put it in the microwave, for 3 full minutes.I then let cool for 2 hours, and then I scraped a bunch of spore prints into the wbs,put on coffee filter, and then cap,and put in my closet, and that was it.I wasn't using sterile conditions to do any of this, and got no contamination.I've spawned my mycelium,to old unpasturized manure, just sitting in my yard, and it's spreading all over the place.Growing mushrooms isn't as hard as a lot of people make it out to be.I've just started a new jar,a few days ago,and i hope this one does good as well.PEACE[image] [/image]

Of course you don't need a pressure cooker or spore syringe to grow mushrooms. Neither of those exist in nature and they grow as happily as ever if the conditions are right. However by not following proper procedures you're going against some pretty bad odds. Generally the risk is not worth the savings in effort expended.

Yeah, that's true, but I have tons of sporeprints just sitting around,so if I fail,it's no prob, and not costing me anything. That is mycelium, and sorry my cam doesn't take good pics.It has a rich mushroom smell, and it's spreading fast.I just checked my new jar,and much to my surprise, more mycelium, and I just started this one 4 days ago,it's amazing!Anyone with doubts about microwave sterilization,I can tell you it works, and works well.I'll post pics of the fruits,if any, when I fruit them.PEACE

Ok,My mycelium is the healthiest I've ever seen,it is so bright, and fluffy.I've got it in a five gallon bucket, with lid,for optimal humidity.I have it floating on about 9 inches of water in the bucket, and I believe this is what's keeping the humidity so hi.I've also noticed little knots forming, and some look like the start of little cubensis.how long after the knots form will full grown mushrooms start to form?I also took out a small amount of mycelium, buried it in a mound of chicken, and cow manure, and it's all ready producing small pins. This really is a good method,to grow shrooms, mixed with the really hi humidity outdoors, and the water inside the bucket,I'd say my humidity levels are in the hi 80's,to low 90's.the condensation on the inside of the bucket confirms this. What do you guys think about this method, and when can I expect some fruits?Any input will be greatly appreciated.P[image] [/image]EACE

You shouldn't get pins or fruits at this stage. Your bucket of poo is still not 100% colonized. I mean if you introduced it to light, FAE, and the correct temps the little amount of mycelium you have would probably try to fruit. But thats not what how you should grow. You should keep that in the dark with a lid on it with a few small holes so co2 builds up. Then once the entire substrate (your poo) is colonized by your spawn (your wbs) you can either treat it as a large cake and dunk it and put it in your fruiting chamber or what have you. Or you apply a casing layer. Which ever way go from that point your looking at around 2 weeks for full mushroom growth. But it can take longer.
You should really do some more reading. You seem to have the general direction and def the luck, but your rushing things and missing steps.
Good Luck

Bottom line is this, myc stays white, pure white, almost 100%. Any color is contam, green mold will first appear as white, but will very soon turn green with spores.

Ok,I'll let it fully colonize, and then try to fruit it.Last time I checked, there were very small pins trying to form.Would it be possible to fruit it in the bucket? The humidity is real hi in there.

If its forming pins im not sure what will happen. Its either going to keep trying to fruit or maybe try to colonize if you put it back in the dark. And you don't have to worry about humidity or fresh air while its colonizing. When its colonizing it should be in the dark with a lid with a few small holes in it or something like that. When your substrate is colonizing you only want a small amount of gas exchange. Mycelium produces C02 while its colonizing and it needs to keep the c02 levels up while doing so. (don't ask me why). But after the substrate is fully colonized then you take that and introduce it to fruiting conditions, which is light, fresh air, and a temperature drop. All of which are pinning triggers. The humidity isn't really a pinning trigger, it just needs to be kept high so your substrate doesn't dry out. So to help prevent that, normally a casing layer is applied.
As for asking if you can use the bucket. I guess thats up to you to decide. If the bucket is maybe a quarter of the way full then you could drill some holes and plug with polyfill, for fresh air while keeping your humidity up. Then you just need a source of light. so if its out side you could maybe take a piece of plexi glass and lay it on top so the light can get in.
I'm not really sure what type of setup you have or if you have a setup at all but really your best bet would be to just wait for it to colonize and then case and add to a shot gun style tub with 4-5 inches of perlite in the bottom. And some source of light.

ok,well, this is the second flush from my little experiment, and it worked well.My camera batteries were drained,so I didn't get a pic of the first flush, but it produced enough nice shrooms for 4 people to trip on.Pins are still forming too,so I'll see how long I can keep it going. If I keep adding more fresh manure on top, will it keep producing?I can get all the free horse manure I could ever want.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.PEACE
