ID Request, from cow pasture in central florida
    #7430658 - 09/19/07 11:47 PM (16 years, 6 months ago)

I'm new at this and don't want to get sick. I'm working on my first printing right now and will put it up tommorow after work. They came from a cow field and I realllly hope they are good ones. I haven't had them in so long.

Not cubes, not actives, ive seen those before, your looking for something with purple gills, more golden cap, and bruise blue. The ones I seen like those dont even come out of dung.

That is Chlorophyllum molybdites. If you eat them you will get extremely sick.

You won't die, but you will wish you had for a couple days.

> Some species of Lepitoita, Not active , dont think its toxic but not edible either

Many species of Lepiota contain deadly amatoxins.

Wow you guys are awesome, thank you. The spore print looked yellow although the paper was not dry, it was definitely stained yellow. When I pinched the stems, it seemed to turn brown. The cap had some faint bluish green around the gills, but barely noticeable.

Although heartbreaking, I threw them in the trash this morning. Tonight I am going to bring a bag and grab a bunch, specifically looking for cubes. I didn't want to get caught so I grabbed the largest ones I could see in the pitch black field. Is it typical that many different species will grow in one field or will one "take over"? Should I find a better field. It seems that finding a safe and accessible spot is difficult, this is right near my house. Thanks for your help guys.

no worries about what you find in the field hundreds of species co-exist with each other , and the lepoita/Chloro whatever it is , is going to be present in most every field you hunt , keep looking , youll find them cubies.

psifr33k, how often have you found Green Gills??

I ask, because to anyone who has seen thousands upon thousands in almost every habitat imagineable, these are C. molybdites.

Also, look at this comparison of the pileus scales of C. molybdites, and C. rhacodes (previously Macrolepiota rhacodes):

They Green Gills are the bottom set.

ive found hundreds in multiple states ... my only argument was the fact that every green gill ive seen with the gills extremely damage and bruised showed extreme green bruising , the gills on these mushies just look brownish tan. and arent Greengill spores white?

No, C. molybdites has green spores. YESSUP had a really good photo of a print.... ah, found it:

Anyway, I have found many Green Gills, with stark white gills, generally at younger stages of maturity. To me, the gill shot posted is green. It is also brown, but that is consistent with MANY of the Green Gills I have ever encountered. Not all turn green, until they are old and rotting, by which point they are brown/black/green.

So I should be looking for strictly purpleish bruising with dark gills? I guess the top should be goldish orange with a smoother top and no scales. Oh and should I wash them before ID? Is that the right way?

Caps look for the golden faded yellow, sometimes theres sporeso on top or a bit of water damage, so they can be blue/black and yellow also.

The caps can be more domed or more flat

It will also have a veil sometimes bigger sometimes almost absent, on top it should be purpleish black from spores being dropped

Spore print purplish black

Now bruising, this is the key thing here, cut the stem in half, in a few minutes it should turn green/blue (i really need to get better bruising pictures some time...)

no sir , you are looking for mushrooms with orange fading to white caps , purplish gills , veil remnant that is purple, blue bruising , and growing directly from cow dung, no washing , and your looking for purple spore print

They can vary somewhat in appearance, also...

You can notice how slight the bruising can be on these two:

Here's what your print should look like(minus the green spot):

Ok guys, I'm back from tonight's hunt and it didn't go well. All of them look the same as last night (it was really dark and near houses so I couldn't use a light) except this one which does not bruise blue (stem). You should be able to see from the pic that I put it down for a second and it made a mark. I'll put the full print up tommorrow if you guys think it's worth it.

P. antillarum is the outdated synonym for P. semiovatus var. phalaenarum.

Those damn sneaky scientist bastards renamed Panaeolus antillarum to Panaeolus semiovatus var. phalaenarum a few years back.

You really can't trust those shady fuckers. I wonder what they will be calling it next year.
