i think coon would know.

Most gymnopilus species are very widely distributed, they are apparently supposed to grow everywhere.
> and the rest of the gym finds , never a species mentioned .. So back to my original question..
It is hard to ID gyms to species because not many people have the monographs, they are hard to use and the taxonomy of this genus is pretty confused anyway.

incorrect , as far as i can see there would only be two species that grow here , spectabilis and lutefolieus or w.e was just curious as to which was more common , and if they were found mostly on decaying wood which i know that's what they grow on now, So im looking for Orange - yellow - white with reddish coloration and orange to rusty brown spores, sounds alot like gallerinas !! woot , always bruise blue correct? i guess my best bet would be to look for spectabilis only reason im looking for gyms is because im tired of weilii , the trip is semi enjoyable but im really starting to hate the less visual and more body high trip that weilii gives , i miss a good ole cube trip where i can sit there and keep munching mushies laughing my ass off , instead of eating 2 gms and being like holy shit im tripping balls , and not really have much visual or enjoyable feeling

With you on the less body high, more visuals thing. I don't really dig the body high as much as the visuals.
And gyms are pretty easy to tell apart from galerinas if you know what to look for and if you're careful enough to properly ID them before eating them.

Most gyms with have some sort of greening on the caps or inside/outside of the stem. A lot of active gyms seems to have small little dots of green on their caps. If there are none then you can cut it in half and search for any inner greening. Just because there's no green though does not mean they aren't active. But it is common to find inactive patches when it's too hot outside. In Texas it seems like even though they show up in the spring and continue to winter, they don't become active till fall.
Also you can look for somewhat purple caps, as luteofolius will often appear purple to purple-red when immature, or not exposed to sunlight.

why would i do that when all my questions were answered right here coon =P Specially when i already did a search for gyms and im very aware of how to identify a gallerina .. Ok so im looking for a slight greening , i would assume gyms have a yellow flesh to em them , good deal well soon as we get some rain ill have you guys some gyms =P shouldnt be all that hard to find i have alot of woodland around where i stay , and P-S the weilii are already out ive got about 2 dry oz's that i had came accross the other day , one nice flush of one of my patches , but i havent really seen any in the past few days since then we just need some rain.

yep, canopy near water.flood plains of creeks and rivers are best up here.I like areas logged out years ago with thick second growth hardwoods near rivers best.you dont have to depend on rain as much for gyms to fruit, good gym areas are always fruiting.
