The tyvek and/or polyfill needs to go on the outside so it can remain dry. You don't need to use both.

There will be a small amount of polyfill inside the jar, but trim it with scissors after inserting so it sticks into the jar no more than 1/4". If you're using a syringe in a glovebox, polyfill is probably better. Keep the grains well down from the lid by filling the jar 2/3 full. If you have a flowhood and are using agar wedges or grain to grain transfers, I prefer tyvek or synthetic filter disks.

im gonna do its in a rubber maid so a glove box then im gonna colonize about 5 jars then move to bulk with 18 jars with coir and cofffee so i should use tyvek with no holes for the bulk jars? then just keep doin bulk and toss out the old jars with holes huh thats what im thinkin

um I don't get what you're saying. you don't put holes in jars. you put holes in the lids. with tyvek you still need holes or else the tyvek does not good. tyvek = filter for air. air can't pass through solid metal lid so we put holes in the lid. make sense? 3 1/8" holes should be fine

nah i have 1 hole in each lid with a polyfil in the middle but whats better for the tyvek to be under the lid or over the polyfil

Neither. You don't need both.

I put my tyvek above my lid like RR suggested.

Problem im having is that after i shook up the grains both after P.C. and after innoculating, i got WBS sandwiched between my jar lid and the tyvek above it. Apparently 1/4 inch holes let the WBS right through when i shook em.... Im hoping it wont be a problem?

anyone?

well i wouldnt think the polyfil alone would work when i shake my jars it looks as if it will just pop out and the tyvek alone doesnt provide an airtight seal so if you putt em together the tyvek stops the polyfil from popping out i would think what do you do RR?

if the tyvek isn't sealing then you're using it wrong. cut out a square that is larger than the screw on band. place the lid on first then the tyvek then the band. when you screw on the band it should hold on the tyvek. tighten it down all the way. how is it not sealed? also you don't want air tight because that's what the air permiable tyvek is for. an air filter.

also since you have 1 inch holes you should just throw them out and get new discs because you don't need that big of a hole. too much air exchange will dry out your grain and cause your jars to stall. if you're using polyfill a 3/8 hole is enough. if you're using tyvek I wanna say 3 1/8 holes.

toadstooly : you don't need 1/4 in holes 1 of hose is equal to 4 1/8 holes. so if you have 4 of em that like 16 1/8 hole. way too many and less chance of wbs getting up above because that is really bad.

The polyfil should be in tight enough that you shouldn't worry about it popping it out. I've shaken the hell out of more jars than I can count without the polyfil once popping out on me.

I like that you asked a question got pleanty of answers from people who know what they're doing and you just ignore it and do it all wrong. and noobs wonder why their grows fail so often. Tyvek goes over the lid not under. and you don't need both.
