A convicted crack dealer caught with a kitchen knife in his car will be sent back to Jamaica after serving five years in jail, the Old Bailey heard on Friday.
Illegal immigrant Joseph Barrett, 37, came to the UK in 2000 and had been working as a mechanic from his Battersea home, in Hemans Street, despite not having a driving licence.
On March 16 he was pulled over by police while driving through Brixton.
He was arrested, but later released on bail, after officers found 2.65g of powder containing cocaine, which had been split into 12 wraps, and a 20cm kitchen knife.
Less than a week later he was again caught red-handed.
Police stopped him while driving along Christchurch Road in Colliers Wood, and found 30 white rocks of crack cocaine with a street value of £600.
During the trial last month Barratt claimed he did not know what the rocks were and said he often lent his car to people.
But despite telling police "any number of people" could have planted the drugs, the Jamaican was convicted of all the charges.
Judge David Paget QC jailed Barrett for five years and recommended he be deported at the end of his sentence.
The judge said: "You are here illegally and your continued presence must be a detriment to this country.
"You came to this country in 2000, you were living here illegally and were working as a mobile motor mechanic although you only held a provisional driving licence.
"I have no reason to doubt you are a confident driver but that misses the point.
"Driving uninsured and without a licence puts other members of the public at risk in the event of an accident."

Quite Frankly, they should of dealt him a harsher sentence. Crack & Coke only aids to the ills of Society and destroys people.
If it was weed or shrooms, it'd be a whole different story.

Yeah, another "your drug is better than my drug" yoyo. Repeat after the government, "Drugs are bad." Thats it! You can do it! Don't think, just repeat!
The reason why cocaine is such an "ill of society" is because it is illegal. Read your history and think a little bit rather than regurgitating government propaganda.

If you honestly believe I am spieling government propaganda, you are retarded. I am sorry, but the physical, mental, and social problems which cocaine can and does cause is undeniable. For you to say that the reason cocaine causes so much damage to society is because it's illegal is just rediculous.
I've had 2 friends die from heart failure from doing coke and believe me, they had absolutely no regard for the law. It comes down to people getting hooked on the shit and doing too much of it.
Do your homework man, read your history.
And don't you dare come back with a coca leaf argument, because the unprocessed leaf the azteks chewed on for energy is not even in the same category as cocaine.
Cocaine is addictive, dangerous, and should be illegal. But if you want to chew on a coca leaf, be my guest, but you'd be better off drinking a red bull.

The fact that cocaine is addictive and dangerous is one of the reasons that it should be legal.
Making it illegal only makes it cool and more popular, and provides a huge financial incentive for dealers to move it. No one goes around trying to sell kids beer, but many people have a vested financial interest in selling kids cocaine. The black market has made cocaine many times more popular than it would be if it was not banned, as has happened with cannabis and mdma. If it was legal it would be just another crappy legal high, not really worth doing.
