Loonie vaults over 99 cents US in overseas trade Last Updated: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 | 8:43 AM ET CBC News
Canada's currency continued its flight toward parity with the U.S. greenback as the loonie briefly breached the 99-cent US mark in overnight trading on global currency markets.
The Canadian dollar set another standard in overseas trading at 99.18 cents US.
Later in the day, following the release of surprisingly benign Canadian inflation data, the loonie was going for 98.57 cents US in North American trading, down 0.07 of a cent from Tuesday's close.
"Analysts say any day now, Canadians will wake up to find out a Canadian dollar is worth exactly as much as the U.S. dollar; maybe even a little more," CBC-TV's Danielle Bochove said Wednesday...

Loonie hits par with the U.S. dollar
A strong oil price and the faltering U.S. economy have enabled the Canadian dollar to surpass the greenback in value for the first time in nearly 31 years.
The Canadian dollar rose as high as US$1.0001 just before 11 a.m. on Thursday -- something that hasn't happened since Nov. 25, 1976.

I hope this doesn't mean you guys start making U.S. jokes. But it would be just like you mean and spiteful syrup slurpers to do so.

I don't know where they got those numbers from. My charts say the lowest it traded was at 99.90.

That's less. If you wanted to buy a $1 chocolate bar in Canada your $1 US wouldn't be enough coz it's only equal 99 cents, and you'd have to walk all the way back to the US and the USD would probably be worth even less by the time you got there and it might even be snowing but you'd be ok if you brought a good jacket with you.
Wait, we're both in Canada.

IMO Its artificial inflation caused by American investors investing in the Canadian market, looking to diversify their portfolio away from American stock, because the U.S. dollar is deflating; and the U.S. market is seen as weak and unstable. Even Foreign investors who would normally invest in American stock are looking at alternative prospect countries.
Its a game, You buy in at 2-1 and see how high you can collectively nudge the price until it collapses. Canadian inflation is good for the international marketplace, because it equalizes the playing field making it harder for poorer nations to undercut developed nations. How much longer can America continue to believe its an independent sovereign nation leading the world in world that is increasingly interdependent?
With the U.S. dollar so deflated and the Canadian inflated its a bad time to invest in Canada, and a good time for Canadians to invest in America if they are confident enough in a rebound of the American economy. The deflation of the U.S. dollar and collapse of our economy was an inevitable conclusion to over-inflation, that left no room for growth potential and stagnated the US economy.
