Small mushrooms
    #7427599 - 09/19/07 11:09 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

So i just did another grow and today i picked off 2 mushrooms from my casing. The problem is that it seemed like they grew smaller than usual. My casing mix consists of cow poo, substrate, and peatmoss. I don't know if i messed something up because every other time i've done this they grow big. the casing layer is about 3.5 in. thick. the top of the casing is not completely colonized but i would say that it was about 80% covered in white. THIS IS A MYSTERY. Please help me

casing isn't supposed to have nutrients... cow poo is nutrients... it will likely act like coir/verm casing and overlay, your casng layer isn't supposed to colonize the mycellium is supposed to reach through the casing which has the purpose to provide moisture for your substrate.

i don't know why your shrooms are small.... what's your substrate?
pics?

i just reread what you said

you are confused... especially if your casing layer is 3.5 inches thick casing layer should go over your substrate and only be about 1/2 an inch thick... a full detailed explanation of what your spawn/substrate was made of and the process you used beginning to end will help a bit, pics will help a lot usually.

ok. so i used Orista India (or however you spell it)as the spores. Then i inoculated some jars using the syringe method. Then once they were fully colonized i took some cow poo, peat moss, and water and pasteurized it in the oven. Then once everything was cool i took the poo mix and made a casing by mixing 1.5 cups of colonized bird seed with it. Then i put it back in my incubator for about 10 days. I saw lots of white on the top of the casing so i figured it was about time to transfer it to the fruiting chamber. So i did that. I made sure that the casing mix was nice and moist by spraying a 90% water/10% hydrogen peroxide solution into the chamber. I did this once a day for 3 days. After about a week i began to see pins. I figured that this was normal. Then today i noticed that one of the small mushroom's veil had popped so i picked it. it is about 2.5 in. long. Thats why im a little peculiar about this whole deal. My camera is broken so pictures aren't really an option for me at this point. I hope this is a little more detailed than my first post. lemme know what you think. Thanks

okay you got substrate and casing mixed up peat and verm are casing material cow poo is substrate material... you should've put the wbs with the poo and let it colonize fully then take the peat and verm mix and covered it with a 1/2 inch (thats a casing layer)...

now all that said the fact that you added cow poo to verm and peat should make a workable substrate but you still dont have a casing... casing is what goes on top..

you also shouldn't be misting with h202 only use it to kill cobweb it damages your mushroom mycelium keep misting with water and hope for the best make sure it gets plenty of FAE i'd go for 4-5 times of fanning and misting a day. what you've got sounds like it'll be workable, but its far from what its supposed to be..

next time (i dont like using cowpoo so i'm gonna use horse oo in my equation)...

colonized wbs jars spawned to hpoo... cover with foil cut a couple slits in the foil and cover those with micropore tape for gas exchange..

after about 10 days of incubation (in an incubator works but room temp is fine as long as it's above 70ish.) check it if its 95% colonized or more take some peat and add 1 teaspoon of lime per cup of peat (as per RR's suggestion earlier today, although he's said it before.) and about 10% gypsum to your peat. now mix it and get it to near field capacity with water (a light squeeze should only let out a couple drops) now get the same amount of verm to near field capacity ad mix it with the peat mixture and pastuerize that.... thats going to be your casing layer it goes over your colonize hpoo/wbs substrate in about a 1/2 inch layer... once the mycelium starts to poke through the casing (it shouldn't colonize the casing) start your misting/fanning regiment and introduce light...

hopefully that helps.

I thought WBS needed to go into a PC before use. Was it even hydrated?
