Actually, the wbs in the qt sized jars aren't being used as cakes like the 1/2pt brf/verm jars are. Once the wbs is about 25% colonized, you need to shake it real well to redistribute the colonized mycelium. Then after the jar is 100% colonized, you need to break up the wbs in order to spawn it to hpoo or some other bulk substrate. Or, you can just straight case the wbs. Not as good as spawning to bulk, but will work. One of the easiest ways to break up the wbs after full colonization is to beat the jar against a bicycle tire, or something similar. Hope that answers your question...

i was planning on casing. so you just break it up in the jar enough to get it out? then crumble it and all that stuff of course..

you shouldn't really need to crumble it except for one or two small clumps. I just cased 6qts last night and I didn't have to crumble much of anything at all. Just a couple of pieces that wouldn't break when knocking my jar against the tire. After it's broken, it will just slide right out of the jar and you can kinda spread it will you're pouring it all out. After i pour it in my container, i just give the container a couple of shakes back and forth to even out the wbs. that way i really don't have to touch the wbs if at all possible. Not sure if this matters or not, but i wear latex gloves (wiped down with alcohol) just in case i do touch the wbs. that way my hands are sterile.

Well, the wbs does basically form a big cake in the jar, but you have to break it up. It's not terribly hard to break up though. In case you haven't read it yet, go read Doc's WBS Tek and 6T (6Tango's) WBS Tek. Those are the ones that I read and followed. Mainly Doc's though. This is my first time doing wbs and it has done fine so far. Check out this link to a post I put up last week or so. Will give you an idea of how easy it has been for me to do the wbs. Good luck

i prefer RR's method of hitting the fully colonized jar against a bike tire then wiping the jar down with alcohol just to make sure its clean again before proceeding. breaks the grains or WBS up without damaging them nearly as badly as a fork or spoon can.

i agree...that's what I used last night and it worked fine for me. didn't actually have a tire but had a padded bar that worked just fine. Those were the first casings i've ever done so i'm anxious to see how it turns out. Also, not sure if you remember answering my question yesterday about the lime and cal carb, but i ended up using the lime with my MGMC as well as a some gyspum. tested my ph and it was right on...it was about 7.5 on my meter. hopefully things we be alright.

if Ph was 7.5 you should be fine. there is definitely no need for both, its just how i do things.

but definitely i think the bike tire method is best, i used to use my thigh... it hurts after a couple jars.. arm of a couch works too (if its padded well)

i saw a video on youtube and a guy was beating his jars on a half a roll of duck tape....i only say this because its smaller than a bike tire and for those that are doing stealth grows it would be better than having to explain why there is a bike tire in your room...nothing suspicious about having a roll of duck tape laying around.

peace

I just use the bottom of my fist. If it starts to hurt, use your palm, or the other hand.

I used to hit it against a phone book, but one time with a really stubborn jar I shattered it.

I just stick my 4 fingers in the jar and spin it counterclock wise. Its best to use only counterclock wise or your myc will get pissed. Anyhow.. Just break it up and put it out piece my piece.

fingers are gross... i wouldn't do that...

especially when shocking the mycelium by breaking it up. i'm sorry but even though it works it's bad advice IMO.

basically.

you shouldn't have to beat the hell out of it though, on a tire it usually comes apart very easily
