If you've ever had two dogs living together then you'd definitely know that animals have egos. My oldest dog gets annoyed by the younger alot and gives obvious signs to the younger one to piss off. But she'll let us do whatever, and pet her and stuff whenever. That clearly shows that dogs have some value system, and can judge one person over another. That being said my older dog hates my older brother as when he was younger he was an asshole to her, and she barely lets him pet her.

It's not as obvious to me I guess...

Also if this is true.. in what types of animals and insects... Or do they all?

Yes, they do have their own likes and dislikes.

I have seen it everywhere, with no exceptions I believe.

I am not an entomologist, and have limited experience with them, but I think its very possible that insects also must have their own choices.

They def. have a different ego structure, but its there.

Domestication has nothing to do with it. Personality and individuality trancend these boundaries. The only difference between domesticated animals and wild animals is that domestics are more "complascent" in their lifestyle and manner, whereas wild animals dont take anything for granted. Their manner and attitude towards others is that of caution and safety.

Almost any species can tell itself from others, and know who is in the in-group and out-group.

Phishe, come to India, itll be really easy to befriend a monkey here. Theres plenty of them around. No, really.

Damius, studying primates is ok. I think if you can find the larger picture in terms of behavour and understanding, then you can extrapolate some of those findings and use the same clues for other genera and families.

Ah, you dont have to worry about all that. Just be respectful, and theyll be cool. I think that works with all animals. If you show respect and follow their body language (its primal, just trust what you feel without thinking about what they are saying or doing) things will turn out ok.

I get close to wild monkeys and other animals all the time (close like 2-3 feet), and nobody has bitten my face off yet, and no bananas or bait either!

I've always thought about this, and I'm really not sure. Insects, animals, and other forms of life might have egos; however, if they do, the understanding and meaning of their ego would differ far from ours, and therefore, it is not accurate to classify that part of their personality as an ego. Really, I don't think they have egos. In our sense of the term ego, it might be that they have indistinct and unmatured egos. I think that our ego is that which seperates us from other creations. If we didn't have egos, then we wouldn't be human, and if animals had egos, then, well, they wouldn't be animals.

Fuckit. We dont knnow how to treat people. This sucks.

I don't think insects have an ego as we see one. They are driven with instict, only adapting their insticts with the little abilities like feeling pain and pleasure(randomly they will feel much of both, adepting their insticts and sending forth kids who will like/dislike the same things.)

So basically as the world changes their insticts will too.

The line that stands between animals and humans (on a very basic level, no metaphors) would be that fact that humans can be good at ANYTHING, while animals are stuck to doing whatever the parents did good (hieghtened sense of smell for dogs, being extrememly aware for birds, digging for gofers, and so on and so on.

We change our genes by doing things really intenesely(or really good, same thing).

if by ego you just mean consciousness then I'm sure all higher animals have one. But I don't actually think they're the same thing.

Obviously humans are animals but what makes us different from the rest is language and use of tools. Though both of these can be see to some extent in the animal kingdom.

This is an interesting topic. I wonder if there are any experiments to determine if an animal has an ego. Difficult to know where to start.

Animals have egos, and there's no way to prove it.
They can't talk or express themselves, so we think they don't.
Just imagine how sad they must be when we mistreat them, just because we're strong, intelligent and tall.

I think its less sociology than other things.

I have done some studies in animal behaviour as well as social behaviour of mammals. Add to that hands on experience with crocodiles, snakes, and wild cats and there some idea there. Plus I had friends in entomology and other disciplines.

Here is one of teh places I worked at in SoCal with the wild cats.

http://www.cathouse-fcc.org

From what I have seen first hand and studied, they def. have an ego, but different structure.

As for studies on ego, some have been done, and from studies of the highest orders of mammals like dolphins, whales and also the apes, it is abundantly clear that they have ego in the same sense that we have.

Honestly Id be interested in seeing what would happen if you fed a Gorilla, Chimpanzee or an Orangutan mushrooms what would happen?

Would they take over the world coz then they would know the world as we do? Planet of the Apes anyone??

all with a shitty camera phone i got alot closer but didnt photo graph and i was with em for 3 hours or so. then smoke pot dealer called smoked me out then sold me some for half price of white widow it was a good day then i smoked it and smoke one said they wanted it offered full price and i sold it for that the amount smoked made it an equal to what i paid so i got 2 smokes for free
