we cant answer that.. but its a possibility primates and other intelligent mammals might have an ego. Maybe they just have super-egos. these are just guesses.

i always wonder this about insects..
i often wonder if it is wrong to kill an insect as well...i mean it is going to happen sometimes no matter what, but should i really be going out of my way to step on a spider or something in my house?...or kill 20million flies at my buddies house bc he never shuts the fucking windows?
i always feel bad if i just go squash a bunch of insects, but should i?
i think since i do feel bad immediately then i really shouldnt..

I worked with wildlife for a long time before I got into ecology.
Do you mean ego, or self-awareness (including differentiation of self or other and concepts like this)?
I think if you mean ego, like how the concept works with humans, then yes, I would agree that probably only the most highly evolved mammals have this.
I believe however that everything in the animal, plant, insect whatever kingdom you want to include have some amount of self awareness and conciousness of self and other.
I would like if you could explain the question in clearer terms, because I find this a very interesting topic of discussion.

I'm working on an amateur paper about sense of self and the soul, at about a half-page on paper at the moment
chimpanzees, in a few minutes of trying to figure out why they can't get at the other chimp, will recognize itself in a mirror, explore itself physically while watching the motions in the mirror, and responds to change in its physical appearance (such as a chimp pulling paint out of its hair when applied by a person)
I'm sure lots of animals have egos, but I don't know if they are as complex/more complex as ours (for their sake, I hope it isn't)

Well, what I was asking is... Do insects and animals have their own likes and dislikes. Names... Personalities to other animals..
It's not as obvious to me I guess...
Also if this is true.. in what types of animals and insects... Or do they all?

Humans are animals and...guess what? Not the only ones. We are only one opportunist species. Long after we die off, other souls will continue...

But they are very un-human in ways too...
They have different ego structures?
I'm just trying to better understand this.

yes, many (most, all?) primates are able to recognize members of their group and can distinguish from newcomers/outsiders
individuality
I'm sure this is true of cats and dogs as well, but I don't think they are prime examples considering most of them are domesticated and could have possibly picked up those behaviors from us
I wish I had time to study more than just primates, but that's what I'm taking right now
