measuring hydrated lime

Ok, I was making my first 50 50 casings and i read that 48 teaspoons were in a cup, so i added a added a "skimpy" teaspoon of hydrated lime per half-cup of peat to my mix.

The steps I took:

4 half-cups of peat
4 half-cups of verm placed in strainer and mixed around well while contents dry.
Ran water over the mixture and squeezed extra moisture out while adding contents to new bowl by the handful.
Put 3-4 teaspoons of "Hi-Yield" hydrated lime into the mix and stirred around well.

I noticed after adding the lime the substrate developed a more finer texture, as well as eliminated all clumps that were stuck together. This stuff looked like it was already working.

Anyways, I was baffled on how to get the right lime content for my mixture after reading numerous posts on people confused on the matter. After all my searching i never really found a basic measurement.

24 teaspoons to half cup / 1 teaspoon hydrated lime
48 teaspoons to 1 cup / 2 teaspoons hydrated lime

Thats right @ 4%

But, please correct me if im wrong. I figured it might be an easy way for beginners doing casing to get their 50/50 adjusted just right. The substrate is popping through in multiple places all over the casing layer day 3.

hydrated lime: 5% of total peat moss

if you have a ph meter, 6.5-8 is good. 7.5 optimal adding hl will increase the ph. gl

I've long recommended a teaspoon of hydrated lime per cup of peat. In addition, use gypsum at ten percent of the amount of peat. Mix the lime and gypsum together, and then mix those two well into the dry peat. Hydrate and then mix with the moistened vermiculite and adjust to field capacity, then pasteurize.
