You'll have to ask them. The best way is to not buy a kit at all--mushrooms can be grown with no particularly complicated or difficult materials. Read the "Grow Mushrooms" part of this site.
Check the sponsor boards for reliable spore venders.

Welcome to the board!
I would suggest that you not buy the kit. Everything in it can be bought at the local walmart for far less and the knowledge you gain from doing it your self is worth the work. Read through the growing mushrooms sections, ask questions, and have fun. The best advice I can give you and take your time, learn all you can, make a decision based on what you have learned, and try it.
Oh, and if you are following a Tek, don't skip any steps.

Yet you have to purchase spores separately AFAIK, but as others have said, nobody here will recommend a kit. This is a DIY forum

i'm gonna suggest the PF tek to you. Now the Homested kit use to come with spores but I'm not sure if it still does. I will admit that the homested kit has been around forever and has had good ratings buuuuuuuuuuuuuut I'll say it again your better off doing it yourself it's much easier then you think.

thanks for the reply. i see lots most people are do it yourselfs though a kit makes it sound easier than actually doing it yourself. but i am still leading towards the kit.you wouldnt know of any way of finding out if it still comes with spores do you?

if you are going to spend money to grow shroomz check out some of the sponsors sites and get pre-sterilized brf cakes or rye jars. you will get much more out of that then the kit, better yet make your own this is a hobby remember your not even doin anything thats like fishin for a hobby and usin m-80 to bring em all to the top, sure it gets the job done but with much less satisfaction. you will be much more proud of yourself doin it all and recieving your spoils trust me.....

I agree...Really, the kit isn't going to make things all that much easier. The pf tek for brf/verm cakes is fairly simple. Not sure how much the kit costs, but as stated above, you'll be able to get all the supplies you need for your grow at Wal-Mart,Lowes, etc...for far less than your kit will probably cost. I'm pretty sure that the kit doesn't come with spores. I know none of the vendors/sponsors here sell spores with any type of kits they may have. I'm still a newb, and am about to harvest the first flushes of my cakes and casings within the week. This is my first grow ever and it has been so easy. I just followed all the directions from the teks step by step, and didn't deviate from the directions one bit. Here's and idea of what you'll be looking at cost wise if you go buy the stuff you need....
1. 1/2 pt jars: $7 for 12 (approx) 2. bag of vermiculite: $3-4 3. brown rice(or br flour): $2 (i used rice and ground it up) 4. perlite: $8 (probably need two bags-$4ea) 5. aluminum foil: should already have it 6. micropore tape: $2 (not a necessity) 7. plastic tub: $7 (my sterilite 64qt cost $7) 8. Incubator: don't really need one. I just put my jars in a shoebox in my closet. Works just fine 9. large pot: $15???(maybe more/less)for steam sterilizing. I went ahead and bought a cheap PC for $39. It's small but works. If you follow RR's pf tek, it allows for just using a large pot/kettle. You may have one already you can use. 10. spores: $10. You can get two syringes from Spores101 for $10 I believe. Just order one, and in the promotional code enter "shroomery" and they will give you an extra one. Plus shipping of course. I ordered mine from Sporeworks (4pack of B+ for about $50 and they hooked me up with one freebie for being from Shroomery)
Total: $55 - That's on the lower end of things assuming you just bought the $10 syringe. However, you could get spores even cheaper from Free Spore Ring ($2 or so). There may be a few other little small things I forgot, but basically that's it. Plus, you get the enjoyment of knowing that you did it all by yourself. Hope this helps. Good luck and welcome to the Shroomery!!!
Edit: you'll need some rubbing alcohol, spray bottle, and a lighter. All small items under a buck each. Also, you could buy one more plastic bin to use as a glove box for inoculation. I've heard people do it without them, just have to be extra cautious about your sterilization techniques.
Try looking at these teks... https://www.shroomery.org/16/Basic-Cultivation-Guides 1. PF Tek For Simple Minds 2. RR's PF Tek (Search on Youtube for "Let's Grow Mushrooms" - 4part series) 3. Simple Cubensis Growing Technique 4. PF Tek

yes, if you read up a bit theyll tell that it does come with spores.
i really wouldnt advise it either but all things considered its not a horrible idea. as easy as a basic pf tek grow can be, the homestead kit is a bit ridiculous. you just open the top of the bag and a q-tip coated in spores drops into the rye berries bellow. give it a bit of a shake and leave it in a dark place for a couple weeks while it colonizes. then you break up the mycelium into chunks and mix it with the bag of sterilized poo that is included and wait for the fruits to come.
im not really sure what to say about the genetics though. i just grew some amazonians from them and ate 40 grams fresh this morning. almost no effects whatsoever, just a vivid colors. im have no idea why this is but im hoping its just the batch and the next set coming in will be better.
there is an upside to homestead though, quite a considerable one. i dont know if i should make it common knowledge though lest it change.

It's not do-it-yourself at all. It's buying the same materials in your grow kit, but for 1/5 of the price. It's not hard to wrap your head around; you can be done in an afternoon.

what is the upside if you don't mind me asking? I'm surely not gonna be buying one. Just curious. And, I stand corrected about it not coming with spores. My bad...I just thought there was something legally about selling spores with kits. Also, one more thing to consider about buying a kit with spores...if you were to get caught with it, it would definitely look like you were about to try and harvest those spores. When just ordering spores, you still have the "I'm just using them for microscopy purposes" excuse! But, what do I know? I'm still new to all this. Just havin fun doin it!

Juris1, you are completely correct. PF got busted for selling spores with the PF Tek instructions for growth. If these guys are selling full kits, with spores in the same box/order, they're idiots. There are also repeated, documented accounts of people ordering spores + grow kits being arrested upon delivery after a mangled box or two exposed the contents.
Far better to take an hour to learn what to use and save hundreds on a "grow kit" that more often than not, is based on methods from the late 1990s.

I guess what I meant when I said you have the enjoyment of doing it all by yourself was that you actually go and buy all the materials for your grow kit instead of ordering one put together by someone else. That's all. Sorry if I was confusing.

Thanks for clearing that up Captain! I thought that I was right about that, but every once in a while like 1 out of 100,000 times I am wrong. I could't imagine trying to take that risk! Sure as hell aint worth it to me.

El Charro, that has nothing to do with the quality of spores, really. Psilocybe cubensis produces psilocybin; how much depends on genetics somewhat, and environment somewhat. Bunk shrooms happen from time to time, as the usage of spores to create mushroom mycelium is a sexual process.

well shit it seems the homestead e-z grow producer doesnt mind much for legality then. its widely advertised in high times so i figured he'd be a bit more careful.
that upside is that his website states that spores are legal in the whole of the u.s. because they dont actually contain any psilocybin yet but doesnt specify anything about those states that they are illegal in. georgia california and ohio right? well i ive in georgia and it seems like homestead is my only source for spores. my fear is only that this will be exploited and not available anymore. i wouldnt like him to get busted, he was always EXTREMELY fast in replying emails for help (it was almost like instant messaging back and forth), and even offered me a full refund after i informed him of the less than par results. he seemed pretty nice.

Idaho, not Ohio. If homestead mailed you spores in GA, he's an idiot. To be avoided.
