Habitat: Lawn in bay area california It was purple when I picked it and after a day of sitting in the fridge while I was gone, it's turned black and the spores that it left in the baggy were black too. No bruising that I see
Sorry for the crappy pics, best I could do =/ The second one is just to give a reference of the size.

you should go and find some more and get some fresh pictures. Also a fresh spore print on some white paper.

Well this is the second day in a row I've found them. Yesterday morning I saw one and left it but it disappeared by the afternoon. Should I put them back on the lawn so they drop some more spores on there?
Any guess to at least the genus?

Nah. you dont need to put them back there. You are spreading the spores all around with you where you take them.
My guess would be Coprinus. An inky cap.

Thanks, it seems to be a Coprinus Auricomus.
