New Containers
    #7423220 - 09/18/07 11:19 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Just received my sample from EcoProducts. Shipping was expensive but I am happy with these containers and will place an order if my government agent says its okay. I am especially excited that they are CLEAR! I think it looks better than the Phillips containers, which are black and wrapped with film. They are made out of 100% corn and are compostable in 30 days.

I'm thinking that I will place a small, eye-catching label on the corner of the front of the box, for brand recognition and leave the rest as open real estate so the consumer can see the mushrooms in the tray. I think on the back I will place a recipe booklet.

I'm not sure who makes them, I bought them from EcoProducts.

They have food products as well as building products.

Do they have holes? The mushrooms will need to breathe or they'll fog up the cover and spoil.

No they don't, but I looked at Phillips containers and their holes are punched not molded. Unless I can find a supplier with prepunched holes, I'll just punch them myself, the law allowing.

I'm using Sinden trays, filling with wheat straw plus Spawnmate IISE and using sawdust and grain as Stamets describes on pg 302 GGMM.

Mine aren't square, they are rectangular. I need to fit them through the doors. I also needed each one to weigh less than 100lbs wet. I'm constructing the sides with 1x6s. I guess I need to paint them with marine sealant. I should be able move them about easily enough that I can do spawn run in a humidified, heated, unlit shed and move to the fruiting room right after harvest.

I got my packet today from Indiana Agriculture. I have to register as a manufacturer of food for distribution. The only rules about containers is that they cannot contain any hazardous or poisonous substances.

Oregon does not require anything like that, I don't believe.

This program is for Wholesale Food Businesses. It does not apply if you sell directly to the consumer, ie restaurant or at a farmers market.

Even if I grow the mushrooms and sell them untrimmed and in bulk to a wholesaler, I still have to register.

Great news! If I produce less than 100,000lbs a year, I'm exempt. Exempt from all state regulation regarding wholesale food business. No registration, regulation, inspection, nada.

I know this thread was a bit old, but I'm now looking into packaging containers again, so i figured I'd resurrect this one.

I found these vented clamshells made out of the PLA compostable packaging. $80 for 240 pieces (quart sized).
How does that compare with the Ecoproducts price?
