Irradiation for decontamination

I know heat destroys psilocybin so thats no solution to contaminated mushrooms. What about irradiation? Hospitals sterilize heat sensitive tools with gamma rays I think it is. The tools for irradiation wouldn't come cheap but it would be a good investment for dealers since they could save loads of time and money skipping all the sterilization procedures and working without sterile environments.
Irradiated mushrooms would definitely be fit for consumption since they use irradiation on meat to kill bacteria.
Definitely wouldn't be simple getting your hands on an irradiation chamber though.

Here is a much more affordable alternative to your suggestion.
I think this is the way of the future, and you are definitely thinking outside the box.

That looks effective but expensive.
These are 32 cents each and have a 20 degree beam width.

I remember seeing a contaminated mushroom a few years ago, but out of several million fruits, that was the only one. Why would you want such an expense to use once a year or less on one or two mushrooms? Substrates get contamination quite often, but not mushrooms, which are living fungi. RR

I think he means to sterilize a work area, casing material, glove box, etc...

Too bad, but you need gamma rays for what you're talking about, and you'll never ever find a source in post 9/11 times.
Anyways, if you have the volume you can get stuff gamma sterilized by the pallet load at a commercial sterilization place. I'm not sure why dealers aren't doing it now. It's cheaper and produces a better quality product.

Maybe. E-beams don't penetrate well enough to do the job. Making an x-ray tube is no easy task. You'd do best to just buy one from a manufacturer. You'll have enough problems with shielding and beam coverage anyways.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but I think I would put my money on many other things before this came to mind.

I checked into x-ray irradiatiors. They're about $100,000 for a flat panel device. The company also told me that x-ray tubes don't generate enough flux intensity (x-rays) to be usable for sterilization.
Oh well.

you can sterilize simply with UV if you needed to. it will still be expensive, even just for the right bulb alone it will cost $$ not to mention the ballast.

UV has no penetrating power and is only useful for surface sterilization.

yes but for some applications that is all that you need. air purification or water purification for example. the thought of using gamma rays to sterilize something for personal use whatever it may be is ridiculous in the first place as it is unfeasible and dangerous.

> What about microwave or intense magnetic fields?
Microwave sterilization has never been worked out well because of issues relating to even coverage and water content.
Magnetic fields have no sterilizing effect whatsoever.
