Casing showing growth after 1 day?

Hey all,

I made my very, very first casing yesterday. Straight verm casing with a 1 Puerto Rican cake in it.

It is pretty small, just about the size of a Lysol can as seen in the pic...

Anyways its been about 1 day since i made the casing and i can already see 3 small spots of mycelium, is this alright? I read that PR?s grow and overlay really quick so this is probably good....i hope.

Sorry if im being paranoid im just making sure everything is goin right.

How thick is your substrate/casing? I would lightly spot-case the bits that poked up first, wait for other parts of the casing to catch up a little.

My cat's casings have a tendency to poke through around the corners and sides quickly, while the rest of the tray usually takes a couple more days.

Is that a 5x9 pan?

My dumb-ass cat has seen Tazzies RIP through coir.....in fact, for his last experiment, he decided to just case and put directly into the fruiting chamber (he's got a lot of time on his hands, being a cat and all)...

Within a week, hyphal knots made an appearance. Post first-flush, deep scratching was necessary (lucky he's got those built-in claws :-) but then more magical fruit made an appearance..

This was at temps about 85-90F, by the way. All that fur is insulating.......

How much would you say i should patch it up? Should i just sprinkle like 1 tablespoon over the crazy mycelium?

Yeah just lightly sprinkle verm or whatever over it. You just want that part of the casing to have to colonize a little more substrate, so the rest of your casing can catch up.

My cat's B+ busted through like an inch of casing (peat/coir/miracle gro) in one place in a day - it's been a couple of days and the rest hasn't caught up yet, though.

B+ is such an awesone strain, it's almost like cheating!

Using just one cake, the substrate/casing ..i would think...isnt that thick, esp on a tray that long!

I bet u it's prolly 1/2" thick at best.

When i patch i dont bother measuring tablespoons, i just put enuff to lightly cover it..so that it's just underneath
it. I've also read here that the moment mycellium pokes thru on a pR strain to immediately fruit that sucka...
unless u have the time to check on it every 4-6 hours. Dunno if that's true though!

Do u put ur casing in the incubator ? and if so why cover it with a foil? the lid on the incubator should hold the
light out.

Its a baking tray (not aluminum) so it doesnt have a lid. I didnt have any saran rap at the time so i just used tin-foil. It is kept in a small solid black container with a 100 w bulb shinning on the container. The bulb keeps the temp 29 c in there constantly and the casing keeps its own rH up.

Yes he put it in the incubator.
He covered it so he won't get any contams....you can get contams in an incubator.
Some people have clear plastic incubators.....we keep them in the dark.

I`ve just cased some PR as well, I put it straight into the fruting chamber and it looks like the bastard is overlayed anyway, I`m willing to wait a couple days.
strange how the drop in temp. and co2 hasn`t initiated pinning yet?
But as anyone will say, I`ll just have to wait and see.
