Parkour

anyone here know what it is? and is anyone capable of doing it themselves? i was recently turned on to it by a friend, ive seen tons of videos of it and i am fully intrigued. im in pretty good physical shape, or so i thought, until i saw some of these guys doing their crazy shit. it has inspired me to step up my workouts so i can jump around the way they do.
ive heard there are parkour classes, similar to martial arts classes, anyone heard of them and where they are? someone told me there is a class in cali somewhere but thats all ive heard.

A friend of mine factured a vertebra doing that crazy shit. It's inoperable, so he's looking forward to a lot of pain in the years ahead. This guy is 24, and he's gonna be walking like an old man by the time he's 35.
The idea is cool, but apparently a lot of people doing it have no clue what they're doing to their bodies. If you have to do stuff like that, be sure you're learning from people who aren't ignorant asshats. I just can't believe the human body is capable of jumping off of buildings repeatedly without sustaining some significant injuries over time.

its not the jumping you have to worry about, its the falling you just have to know how to fall if you dont land it right. granted ive never put my body through that much falling and at some of those heights, but ive put my body through a whole hell of alot in wrestling and martial arts.
i think even when i can do some of that crazy shit, i would never attempt to do a backflip from as high as some of those crazy bastards. there are just some things i know i shouldnt do.

Freakin spiderman. That looks a lot like the demo for Assassin's Creed. That guy should go into work as a stuntman.

I live there hah. I've seen them dudes around backflipping off walls and shit.. its pretty fucking cool man
I wouldn't mind having the balance and strength to be able to climb shit like they can.. would certainly be handy when running from the facists

its not just france, it started in france, now its all over the place, basically everywhere in europe, its starting to pick up popularity in the US and canada and im sure in 10-15 years it will be much more popular.
outside of martial arts, in my opinion this seems like the most fun way to stay in shape.
and just think, if you ever have to run for your life, or from the police, you have no problems

the point of jackass was to hurt themselves for entertainment. the point of parkour is to be as physically fit as you can be and have fun. and NOT get hurt.

well, parkour may be a trend that dies out, i mean it got mainstream attention from the bond movie & some madonna video, but it should stay in the underground. no way that could ever turn into a sport or competition.

i don't think it will be a competition. that means there would be a track which the contestants need to pass but how will they be judged? by their creativeness or the one that passes through it faster?

I don't think it should be a competition. I think these people should be ninja like. Ninjas don't have competitions. They don't care if you know who the best one is, they do.

it could be done similar to ice skating, snow boarding or any other sport where you have a panel of judges where they rate you on creativeness, speed, mistakes and so on. it really wouldnt be that hard.

I like to practice Parkour along side with my Kung Fu. Makes for great cardio and endurance.
The whole thing about people getting rediculously injured and how parkour is stupid because it's dangerous isn't necessarily true. The only videos it looks like you guys have seen have been the ones done by the "pro's". If you were to personally looking into training parkour you owuld see the first thing you do before even going outside and working with your urban enviorment is conditioning. Conditioning to prevent any sort of injury that you couldn't get over in a matter of months or weeks. If you ever go to a jam (group get together for parkour) you'll see that even though all the traceurs (parkour practitioners) will do conditioning for the first hour or more, and show eachother new ways to strengthen tendons, and increase flexibility.
Let me try to classify the new forms of "urban movement": Tricking (flips, flashy stuff but not practical, looks cool) Parkour (efficiency. fastest path from point A to B. Not flshy, and all practical [looks cool from intensity]) l'art du placement [sp?] (Very much like parkour on efficiency but lacking alot of the bogus philosophy [not all of it is bogus but alot of it is unnecessary]) Free Running (mixture between parkour and tricking. e.g. instead of doing a vault over a fence one would do a flip over it)
The whole thing about parkour is that it's not about flashy tricks, cool moves, and impractical flips. It's about making your own path. Pushing yourself, mentally and physically (killing the fear). It's about efficiency and taking the quickest path from point A to B.
It's really really damn fun to do, and I really want to get back into it when I join up in Kung Fu again in October.
Any guys in the DFW area who want to get into parkour and need a partner to train with can send me a pm.
