Rye is theoretically best. WBS is fine, but a little trickier to use. When cost and availability come into the equation, WBS wins in my experience. Took a while to get a good method.

I gonna be honest, Im trying barley and quinoa. Ive had more success with these than WBS. Colonizing much faster and stronger. Has been causing rhizomorphic growth in my panaeolus experiments.
Never tried rye. I want to.

In the past I have used quinoia, wbs, rye, millet and a few others but in my experience I have adapted to using 75%rye and 25% WBS in my jars with a little gypsum and then soaked in coffe/water for 36-48 hours then poured onto a big tarp and leave it to dry for about 4 hours while truning the grain occasionaly so all exterior water is gone.
I end up with fully hydrated grain that is dry to the touch. PC it for 1 hour and I end up with a perfect mixture that works wonders for me.

That sounds like a big pain in the ass.
It's so much easier to soak rye for 24-36 hours, simmer until a few kernals burst, strain dry in the collander, load your jars, and PC.
Once you get things going after the soak you can do 2-3 PC loads in a night, and still make it to bed on time.

depends on what you are using it for!~
if you are talking about making spawn jars to use, to inoculate some type of bulk substrate...
then Millet is the best.
if you are talking about growing fruits off of the grain itself...
then Rye grain is the best.

I have done it this way as well. And yes if you are in a hurry it might be a pain in the ass.
I just give up a long time ago on trying to get fruits fast. I guess I also should have mentioned I prep about 35lbs of grain in one sitting. It is easier for me two do it this way because I can watch it while playing outside. I love being outside(of course this is done during summer), also I can inspect a large amount of the grain for uniformity. Mostly I just do it this way because I like my grains to become energized by the sun. I imagine in my head that as the grains are drying in the sun that the tiny atoms that form the grain are being charged to later release this solar energy to the myc during colonization. This is of course pure theory, and probably pure BS. But Hey, I am a nature lover and believe all things can draw energy from the sun.
Just my experience and thoughts.
