its basically just a massive circular rail gun, that accelerates a payload to an astronomical speed and then launches it up into the sky..
-------------------- PEACE
zippoz "in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption" "People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

Could a person survive a ride on that thing? Would the acceleration mash them?

Still, it could be a great thing for getting payloads into space.
This was how they got to the moon in Verne's novel, which is odd because he did know it would kill life and always tried to make his novels as scientifically correct as possible.

Hmmm... pv=nrt; astronomical speed results in astronomical pressures (at low altitudes) generating astronomical temperatures. Long ago I ran the numbers for the design of a railgun to launch nuclear waste into space. Although the energy requirements were insane, the pressure generated by the atmosphere was the killer.

11.2 kilometers per second .
0r 672 kilometers per minute
and 40 320 kilometers per hour
..lets just say 40 000 k/h
***********************************
I think a great interesting solution is to be found in reducing sizes as small as possible .

That kind of defeats the purpose of moving things into space doesnt it?

Nope ..
It changes the scale and accordingly alters the dynamics (for instance the threshold concerns Seuss mentioned)
e.g. Would you send a library of books into space or a Computer hard drive ?
Micro satellites should be able to do much of what bigger units have done in the past . and launching an object about the size of a pack of cigarettes and weighing in the grams scale opens a lot of possibilities . It could fold out into the dish size of a bus .
As far as launching large masses .. into space as opposed to satellites . I am not up on the current stuff, i like the idea of massive solar collectors sending a tight beam of laser light to earth and using that energy channel to reverse engineer an elevator into space personally .
Of course you can send multiple small parts to compile a larger unit as well and the dynamics of moving smaller objects by for instance the magnetic accelerator may be more effective than sending larger unit packets .
A tight magnetic beam would be cool too

So is the payload magnetized ?
or is it really a rail-gun/sling with a release ?
