In a college town in vermont expect to pay about 1000 for a 2 bedroom. Also, it gets cold up here, so utilities can change the cost quite a bit. A lot of landlords include utilities though.

Also know that the medicinal marijuana scene here is NOTHING like california or any of the west coast. Vermont medicinal laws limit pot to a few very serious conditions. I dont know what your deal is, maybe you do need it for something serious, but it's not like you can come up here and get pot by faking anxiety or depression.

i dont own a house in any of those states, but id go with vermont. i think its cheaper there and my preferences with the cold, snow, privacy, and ski/snowboarding.. etc etc would make it fine with me. i should get out there.

except for some reason it reminds me of that old movie where the guy is captured by cathy bates (if thats her name) she breaks his legs and everything. yeah thats the only thing id be afraid of.. like thatd ever happen though.. not very likely.

the movie is misery.

Id plan on moving to a state for other reasons then medical marijuana. As of right now oregon and cali would probably be the only places lax enough for you to get a script and medicine.

I agree, i wouldn't pick a place for that reason alone. Nor do i want to even pursue the medical scene.

I'd move to Oregon, Wash, or BC, because the lush forests, the myco friendly habitats that are all along the coast. The sunsets over the sea, the four wheeling and the wilderness.

Plus the awesome glass art scene they got going on.

Cali is too expensive for me, though i love the hell out of it.

The northern states are defiantly pretty lax what ever coast your on.

I think Misery was filmed in the Sierras. Cali or Nevada not sure.

$1200-$2500 depending on the size of the house. That's the houses around me, granted they're quite expensive, around 380-720,000 in market value.

Houses in Reno though can be found anywhere from as low as $800 upwards.

Brainiac, what happened?

Yeah Burlington does have an awesome glass scene~! In Burlington you could walk five minutes and check out 3 great shops. I love the one in the basement Full tank, they gt some of the hottest stuff from some of the hottest glass blowers from around the country, cool people too! The Bern gallery i could spend hours at, just hanging, watching and talking glass.

If you are into the woods and harsh winters VT is where it's at!
But I like how Oregon has all that plus the middle grounds, Snow on the mountains and some rain in the valley. Vt is all snow. I like the idea of salmon, truffles, snowboarding, and glass blowing keeping me through the winter in OR.

In Vt I'd only have making beer, glass blowing, and snowboarding.

I rep Vt to be one of the top three coolest east coast places to live.

You can't really gauge the cost of a place in general terms. Asking "How much does rent in California cost?" is kinda like asking "What does candy taste like?" Theres too many different answers to the question, and they are all correct. For example, I pay almost $2000 a month for a 700 sq ft shithole...but I live a block from the beach in San Diego. Drive a few minutes inland and rents drop dramatically. And I could rent a house 3 times the size of my apartment for half the price less then an hours drive from here.

Same equation applies to the cost of buying. 2 doors down from me there is a 400 sq ft studio for sale right now, asking price $300K+. Just a couple weeks ago I looked at a brand new (still under construction) 1600 sq ft home for sale just an hour North of here for under 300K.

You also have the added bonus of being pretty close to the canadian border.

Here's the average for Anchorage, Alaska (you probably wouldn't want to live in any other part unless you're really into the solitude thing).

1 Bedroom - 500-600$
2 Bedroom - 650-900$
3 Bedroom - 800-1100$

And if you need regular spine or physical therapy treatments you might run into a problem.  Although Medical Marijuana isn't too hard to come across if you have a legitimate problem in Alaska, the two major spine and back health institutes will drop you from their program if you test positive for pot even once.

So, take that as you'd like.

I live in northern cali (humboldt county!) and the rent is steep compared to portland, oregon...but pretty cheap compared to southern california.

Last year we had a 2 bedroom townhouse for $690. Now we have a 3 bedroom house with garage and huge yard for $1450. But we're also in a college town and in town now, whereas before we were on the outskirts of town.

About 3 years ago I had a 2 bedroom apartment in a suburb of Portland, OR for $650

If you like Cali but hate the idea of southern california, humboldt county is the place to be. It's groovy and there's so much nature around you--the ocean, the redwoods, rivers, rock climbing....it's just awesome.
