So this doesn't have a chance in hell of growing, right?
    #7417133 - 09/16/07 04:42 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

First time grower here, last time too even if it works I think. It just seems easier and less risky to buy mushrooms from people. I doubt there's any chance this is going to work.

First, the spore syringe, golden teacher, there were clearly spores visible in the syringe but it was OOOLLLLDDD, i had a friend get one for me freshman year of college and I am now in my fifth year. I didn't refridgerate it or anything ever since I didn't know you had to do that, and i had intended to use it for years before I finally got my own apartment where I could do this in private.

I didn't have a pressure cooker so I did steam sterilization which is supposed to not be as good.

I also didn't know the jars had to cool down before you inoculated them (I thought you were supposed to do it right away when they were sterilized) so I inoculated them open air in jars that only had about 20-30 minutes to cool down.

They are big one pint ball jars, and i also didn't know that the stupid canning jars were supposed to have wide lids so if these brown rice flours cakes do get colonized, i'm gonna have to smash them open with a hammer to birth them. I know the cakes don't have to be treated really gingerly since they stick together really well but still, it would've been nice not to have to smash them. It's not like i would re-use them but ya know. It's one syringe spread out across 4 jars, i used the whole thing, probably too much i'm guessing.

I inoculated them on Friday and I don't see any visible change in the jars. I know it takes 2-4 weeks for BRF cakes to be colonized (and that contaminations are pretty clearly visible) but still, it would be nice if I had some indicator that i didn't do this totally wrong or that the heat didn't kill all of my spores.

Then again, my friend who got it for me was probably stoned off his gourd and half drunk when he set up all his terrariums and must have done a bunch of stuff wrong and he usually got like 3 or 4 big yields off all of his of potent mushrooms (I think he used a different strain than what he got me, but i hear good things about golden teacher)

What do you guys think? Can you make a lot of mistakes like this and still have any shot that something is going to grow?

I would suggest starting over if you really want to produce and have the resources you might as well do it right it seems like a lot of work for what seems to be like a less than satisfactory end

Last time I got someone else to order me a spore syringe, and like an idiot i burned up the whole stupid syringe on four jars because i wasn't really watching how much i was squirting into them. Blutjager is probably right, spores die at temperatures of like 90 degrees don't they? Or is there a chance some could survive at all.

I just did this thing so bass ackward and honestly I had no interest in cultivating mushrooms because it's high risk and time investment, i just really really like mushrooms and good ones at a fair price are hard to come by in Michigan.

Might just cut my losses and buy some shrooms and save them until the next time I feel I want to trip out.

What signs should I look for to tell if any mycelium is growing in my jars? Should I be noticing a change by Sunday if I inoculated Friday night?

It is very possible that the spores haven't germinated yet. It could take 3 days or a couple weeks. It depends on the genetics and the conditions the jars are in.

Yeah, I wouldn't write it off just yet. Put them someplace dark and warm and forget about them for a while. If they don't grow mold or bacteria, there's a chance they'll grow mushroom mycelium. A small chance, but not zero.

Uhhh, 90 is really low my friend. Here in OK it regularly gets over 90 during the spring/summer.

Wasnt there a thread where some dude left some syringes in his car during the summer, I think he said he got growth from it. I didnt really follow it, but now this interests me, Ill try this once I get some prints.

Thanks for the kind words for my jars. I actually believe it may help them maybe grow. I put sooooo many CCs into each jar that I really doubt that heat alone could've killed each and every spore - it just may take awhile to colonize and not yield much. I have them in a dark closet with a towel over them, maybe 75 degrees F room temperature. Is this pretty normal? I don't have an incubator.

you fried your spores!~

it would have been way too hot inside the jars with only a 20 to 30 minute cool down period.
