Recovering from Methamphetamine
    #7416814 - 09/16/07 02:40 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I had an awakening last night that almost cost me my life. I haven't used methamphetamine for about half a year now but I regret ever having done it. So I am wondering if anyone knows a little bit about the permanent damage it does or if someone could inform me on if the dopamine transporters can repair themselves after time?

I feel as if in conversations Im always feeling one of the following dull, unwitty, unconfused, self conscious, slow.

whenever I used Methamphetamine, I wouldn't have those problems. I would be able to make jokes, use hand gestures. And Come up with witty remarks and responses in conversations. which leads me to think one of the mechanisms of action of methamphetamine is targeting the same area of my brain that may have some sort of chemical inbalance

Honestly?

I think you've convinced yourself that you are no longer the person you believe you were when you were using.

Being a stimulant, meth inflates one's ego, making them feel funnier, wittier and smarter.

Let go of that "I am no longer cool" thought pattern. Relax. Don't think so much about your personality and learn to become more comfortable in your own skin.

Good luck.

The longed-for tidal wave

And hope and history rhyme.

If you have used it heavily you could damage or at least desensitize your dopamine receptors and then you would probobly feel a little sluggish or out of it. I think that happens when they put schizophrenics on dopamine-blocking antipsychotic drugs. When the dose gets too high they start exhibiting Parkinson's symptoms.

In all liklihood it will just take time for your brain to heal or get readjusted. If you really feel impaired a doctor might give you Wellbutrin which is to dopamine what Prozac is to seratonin.

Definately stay away from stimulants, but if you need the extra boost to be sharp, the caffiene in coffee and tea works in a completely different way and doesn't mess up your brain at all. It supposedly mimics another chemical called Acetylcholine and acts in your peripheral nervous system, but not so much in your brain.

time heals everything

just don't put any substance in your body. let your brain recover from it; just eat lots of protein and omega3 because that'll help your brain produce more of it's own natural amino acids

ie

eat a turkey sandwich with whole grain bread instead of whtie bread.

Meth makes your senses so heightened that everything seems interesting, exciting, and sexy to the nth degree, and once you quit, regular life--even the things that USED to make you happy--can seem boring and worthless. It all goes back to that rush of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine that meth causes in the brain. After one time, most people seek that feeling more and more, which is why it's so addictive.

There are things you can do to boost your own levels of "feel good" neurotransmitters, some of which include doing yoga, taking long walks through nature, meditating, and journaling. These activities boost serotonin more than dopamine, though. If it's dopamine you're looking for, playing loud rock music or drinking a cup of strong coffee can do that, albeit not to the degree that meth could.

I don't recommend taking prescription medications to alter your brain chemistry, as most of them cause side effects (loss of sex drive, amotivation, loss of creativity) and have HORRID withdrawal effects (they call it "discontinuation syndrome" to make it sound less threatening). That's coming from 6 years of experience with the psychiatric meds, so I know first hand how they can suck the life out of, well, LIFE. Most effect serotonin anyway, and will not give your dopamine receptors any effects at all, save Wellbutrin (which gave me a seizure.)

Your best bet is to replenish your body by taking plenty of nutritional supplements every day, drinking lots of water, eating nutritious, balanced meals, exercising, getting plenty of sleep and relaxation, and making time for enjoyable activities. Meth seriously depletes your body's stores of nutrients and electrolytes, so don't underestimate the power of nutrition in your recovery. For an occasional energy boost, try betel nut, caffeine, kola nut, yerba mate, or ginseng. Even ephedra is safe if taken in small enough doses, despite claims to the contrary. Save these mild "uppers" for those times you're really craving meth to avoid building a tolerance to them.

Hope that helps!
