Pressure Cooker Safety
    #7416203 - 09/16/07 10:50 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I got a good deal on ebay and got an All American pressure cooker, the 915, that holds 15 1/2 quarts. Only problem is when I was I had some bother getting it to seal tighty enough. I'm assuming that the lid and body of the cooker should be flush agsainst each other with no gaps - please tell me if I'm wrong.
Anyway I tightened it up, using a spanner to get it tight enough then one of the screw retaining bolts snapped.
I'm not going to be able to get a replacement for a while and I'm not about to run it with only 5 of the 6 tightening screws working but, I've found a drill bit that's about the same diameter as the bolt so would this be a safe work around [image]http[/image]

Also the jigger bit has what appears to be paper round the top of its base it[image][/image]
is this ok or should I look into ordering a replacement jigger too?

Thanks

That an All American Pressure Steam Sterilizer. So, you won't need a jigger.Fungi.com has parts for it.It sould hold 10 Pint jars
7 Quart Jars

The All-American Pressure Sterilizers differ from the Pressure Cookers in several ways that make them better tools for the mushroom cultivator. A stopcock prevents steam from escaping once sterilization temperatures have been achieved (the Pressure Cooker utilizes a weighted vent pipe instead); this means that they require less monitoring than the Pressure Cooker. These units also feature a capillary tube and a removable solid insert basket

Why do you think its a steam steriliser? I thought it was a pressure cooker, it even has a sticker on it saying 'molded aluminium all American pressure cooker'.
Isn't the jigger this bit?[image]http://[/image]

The link doesn't have mine on it, they're all a bit bigger than mine.
Thanks for the link though, the other website I found selling spares won't ship outside North America for some reason, hopefull I'll have more luck with this one.

Hears is what mine looks like.

The person before you may have replace the vent pipe for a Control valve

Hmm, looks like it isn't a cooker then, it has the control valve rather than the weight. Here's some more photos of it here

Thanks, but does anyone have any comment on the safety of using the pc with the drill bit and how tight the seal needs to be?

It should be fine, if you move the drill bit to where its solid.Take some vaseline and put some around the seal on the lid and pot.

Great, I really don't want to have to wait until I get the new parts. Do the lid & pot need to be flush against each other or will a bit of a gap be ok?

No they don't need to be "flush". From my understanding as the pc heats, the seal bonds. It's a safety system of sorts. I just bought a used one too and should be getting it today or tomorrow.

first off it is most likely a pc and not a sterilizer. AA used to make all of their pcs with that toggle valve.

see if you can find a pdf of th user manual online somewhere. you wouldn't have hadthis problem if you read it. if you look at the inside of the lid you should notice that it's angled like this \ and the pot like this / those machines edges com together and when tightening the lid you creat a perfect seal the petroleum jelly that you're supposed to use will help the release basicly it should be like this

\ /
/ \

besides that you aren't supposed to tighten it any more than finger tight. before you go any further you need to remove the lid because it's most likely seized. loosen all of the fasteners and use a flat blade screw driver to separate the lid from the base. put it in the opening and turn like opening a door knob. you might need 2 of em one on each side. DON'T PRY AT IT THOUGH.

oh yeah tightening instructions are as fallows

place cover on cooker bottom so that the arrow on the cover aligns with the arrow on the bottom. gradually and evenly tighten two opposite wing nuts at the same time, maintainin the same size gap around the entire unit where the cover meets the bottom. never tighten just one wing nut at a time.

that's from the user manual word for word.

Thanks for the link to the manual trippindad82, I had been looking about for one but couldn't find it.
Thanks for the info xhooliganx, looks like I over tightened it. I took the lid off when the pin broke so it won't've siezed up.

I'm going to read through the manual now.

Ok, that manual isn't a lot of use, in the specifics at least. I think mine must actually be a pressure steriliser as it doesn't have an 'overpressure plug' or a 'pressure regulator weight' like the manual says. That's ok though. I've got a better idea of how it fits together now - and all the safety tips.

Iolaa - Glad you didn't bid too high. The postage was twice the price anyway but it's worth it, the exchange rate helps, as it's a lot harder to find a decent pressure cooker, especially AA, here.

I'm sure it'll work out. I've only heard good things about AA.
