Some noob questions about growing
    #7415175 - 09/16/07 12:55 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Ok, I've been a PNW hunter for about 3 years now and I'm getting ready to try my hand at growing for the first time, I've been reading grow logs like crazy and all the PF tutorials I can find.

I still have a couple questions though...

I will be growing B+, PF-tek style.

What's better for fruiting, 10 gal. aquarium (I can probably get one of these for free) or one of those plastic tubs?

What kind of air pump should I look for? Aquarium style?

Where the hell do I get those expanded clay pellet things? Garden department of a store?

What do you think is better, clay pellets or perlite or lava rock?

Do I sterilize the clay pellets and perlite just like everything else? (I don't have a PC so I'll be sterilizing w/boiling water)

I think that's all the questions I have right now, thanks guys.

I personally think the PMP with the hydroton and air pump is a bit overkill. Hydroton is harder to find than perlite as well. You should be fine with a monotub style fruiting chamber with 2 inches of damp perlite in the bottom. It is always better to fan and keep the perlite moist to optimize air flow and keep humidity up. However you can easily get by with setting and forgetting it. Plus when you are ready to move on to semi-bulk and bulk substrates you already have a fruiting chamber ready for it.

i precer the plastic tubs because you can make holes in it easily without needing a diamond-bit, i think aquariums may be tempered so prolly not even with a diamond-bit can you make any holes

what you using the airpump for? poor-mans?

you really need to PC your substrate, borrow someones, do what you gotta do. i have to warn you that you won't get very far at all with this hobby unless you use sterile technique

perlite all the way, avoid the miracle-grow enriched, it's too fine for my liking anyway, mostly makes a perlite mush more than a bed

no need to sterilize, just change between flushes
