...and lets say they are headed for earth.
What do you suppose they will do when they get here, and why?

I think that if such a space faring race came to earth it would be exactly the same situation as when Europeans came to America but harmful to us... we would likely be harmed by biological agents that are benign to the aliens... and then they would systematically extract the resources of earth for themselves using humans as slave labor.

I think that like christopher columbus and the santa maria, the ultimate purpose of any space expedition is to colonize another planet, or to find an area rich in materials and labor to exploit.
Why else would a society expend unimaginable resources in a expedition through space? To say hi and then leave? pfffffft

I think symbiotic nano-bots would be developed before inter-steller flight. They would be immunized from diseases. I think its possible they would destroy us from afar to prevent future competition. Im skeptical as to how much they would actually gain by enslaving us.
If they wanted to learn from us the best thing would be to go un-noticed. For example, take art and math. Instead of making contact and exchanging art and math, they watch us develop our own independently of theirs. This would give them a unique perspective that they could never develop on their own. Otherwise, ours and theirs would mesh making a new culture with only one line of development. Maybe independent lines of development would be the most cherished thing to an inquisitive space faring race.

We could end up trading resources, instead of them destroying us to get to them.

We are already here.
We thought our purpose obvious when we installed the most retarded among you as leaders, to self-destruct your world for us.
Nothing like a nice, clean slate. Ahhh.

Do you think contact with the aliens will infect us with diseases we have no immunity to?
Unless the universe is remarkably linear, aliens won't even use DNA, let alone have diseases communicable to us. It would be like me giving a plant the flu, only less likely.
Do you think they will try to take our land, and enslave us for their benefit?
Any creatures able to traverse interstellar distances (especially if they can somehow travel faster than light) would easily have the capability to manufacture a planet. They'd have no more interest in taking over us monkey's land than we would in taking over some worm's hole in the ground.

I planted a flag next to an anthill. I am their lord and master and have trained them to bring me itsy-bitsy glasses of lemonade. It's fun!

I dont think thats true at all. They dont need DNA to pose serious threats to humanity. I think that unless each species had proactive nanites or something removing all foreign bodies, it could easily be disaster.

It is hard to say what they would look like, what's their needs, mission.
But IMO before they do arrive on earth, they would do a thorough study of our civilizations, and come to the conclusion that humans have been exploiting and using other species, and the aliens would have no compunctions about using as toys, guinea pigs, hah..

I disagree with that.
I don't mean a disease per se but a biological agent. Something that could fuck up all our crops or cause us to die. It doesn't have to be a disease it can be some form of bacteria or somthing like that or even "pests" that live inside their ship, like intergalactic space lice.
For example, let's say there was life on europa... and we went and studied it. What are the chances some form of biocontamination would take root in that environment and fuck up life there?
So it doesn't have to be a disease, if could be something simple that is benign to the aliens but dangerous to us in some way.
