hpoo question
    #7414097 - 09/15/07 06:18 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Can I bring the poo to field capacity and then pasturize in a tin-foil covered pan to retain moisture or do I need to do the pillow case thing and pasturize it in water then allow it to drain. I am using my oven to pasturize. It has a low setting of 170degrees. Can I just put it in the oven at that temp or is it too hot?

Thanx in advance for the help...

As long as the poo doesn't dry out that sounds like it will work. I'm not sure how well the tinfoil will hold in the moisture but I guess it's worth a try. I've done the ovenbag thing quite a few times. It takes much longer to heat up the poo to pasteurization temps because you get poor heat conduction with the oven compared to having the poo completely submerged in water, of course the obvious benefit is that you don't need to drain the poo afterwards.

Make sure you check the temp of your poo in the center with a meat thermometer occasionally, it may take a few hours for it to reach 150 degrees.

I would put the poo into an oven bag and stuff a meat thermometer into it to monitor the core temp. This way you will be sure to obtain the right temp and duration. Then you can just add your spawn to the bag once it cools and mix it up before you add it to the container of your choice or just fruit in the bag if you wish. The aluminum foil will work just fine, but the oven bag will retain more moisture.
