It would be where they have gelatin. Maybe they have it and don't even know. Asian food stores sell it for soups and stuff.

A few of our sponsors sell it. It's not that expensive to mail order it, and you get what you want without all the legwork or blank stares from retard grocers who don't even know their own inventory.

Mail order. But I have a hard time believing you can't find it locally. You live in Cali, right? There's agar in Cali.

If after that you cant find it.. than when i get a couple spare dollars ill just ship ya a couple tablespoons of potato dextrose agar, 1 tablespoon per cup of water.
Call both places, ask if they have agar, if they do ask if they sell relatively small amounts to the general public such as half a kilogram.

Agar is easy to find if you know where to look.

First off, check for stores that cater to vegans. Gelatin is made from animals and agar is not. Most vegans will use agar in place of gelatin.

Next, go to the local Chinese market. I have several where I am and every one of them caries agar. It is on the same row as the candy/deserts. They normally have Corn Sugar (Dextrose) and lots of other useful stuff.

I would be careful going to laboratory supply shops. Some areas have a long list of things that they have made illegal. For example, in my area, if your coffee pot looks like this

it is illegal. When you go to a lab supply around here, they require that you let them make a copy of your ID for there records. The state requires that the prove that they have not sold to minors and they they have not sold any of the "restricted" items like my coffee pot.

The supply store i go to is huge and often times the owner isnt there and just his daughter at the front desk is so i usually have to end up nosing through the warehouse cause nothing is organized to find what i want and she usually gives me samples of things to try out. She vaguely knows my name, sure cant pronounce it right.

Thanks for the picture..

vacuum flask with a Buchner funnel, tubing, hand vacuum pump, coffee filter and a rubber stopper with a hole through it.

Im going to go make one now.. my "coffee" is usually pretty thick and it takes for ever to trickle through a filter
>_>
<_<

how does your coffee turn out with that thing?

A microbiologist fellow I was talking too indicated that food grade Agar isn't ideal as its a lot higher in salt content. Any truth to that?

I had not heard of the higher salt content being an issue. I checked the package (I have about 5 here) and they list the sodium content at 10mg on a 42g package. At that consentration I know it is not an issue!

It works great, your friend is just a LAB snob.

np
it's been almost impossible for me to find agar too
i haven't tried this yet, but only because i've not bought any good jars yet

at both my super bi-lo and local wal-mart, i saw some jars that were wide-mouth but only barely an inch tall
they look like perfect agar jars to me, i think they were like 4$ for a six pack of special editon kerrs

i think i'ma pick those up today and possibly brew up a batch tonight

I've found agar agar flakes in no less than 4 grocery stores in my town without even going to the asian stores, though I've never found sheets. The little pouches of flakes are more expensive, though. They will be in the asian/ethnic food aisle, near the soy sauces and sea vegetables (assorted pouches of sea weeds). The more natural-food oriented the store, the better.

Ask for agar-agar, and pronounce it auger-auger if you ask a clerk.

Now Foods makes an Agar product. Do a search on eBay and Google. I believe I bought 2 pounds of this stuff for $40.00 plus shipping. That was two years ago and I still have a ton left.

Hope that helps.

I call it A-ger too. That seems to be the most common way in the mushroom community. However, the asians pronounce it 'auger-auger', so if asking at an asian food store, that's the way.

Coir is most commonly pronounced as 'core' in the mushroom community, right or wrong.

Asians have no word that we use in the English language for this. The Merriam-Webster pronunciations is auger-auger. I know quite a few people who call soda "soder", but I'm not about to start that trend.

Coir is pronounced "Coy-yer".

When in doubt, refer to your dictionary.

That is hardly the same thing. We are talking about a mispronunciation, not alternative words. I routinely refer to children as kids, but I'm not trying to tell you that children is pronounced "kids". Let's try and keep the eye on the ball here folks. :smirk:
