np it's been almost impossible for me to find agar too i haven't tried this yet, but only because i've not bought any good jars yet
at both my super bi-lo and local wal-mart, i saw some jars that were wide-mouth but only barely an inch tall they look like perfect agar jars to me, i think they were like 4$ for a six pack of special editon kerrs
i think i'ma pick those up today and possibly brew up a batch tonight

I've found agar agar flakes in no less than 4 grocery stores in my town without even going to the asian stores, though I've never found sheets. The little pouches of flakes are more expensive, though. They will be in the asian/ethnic food aisle, near the soy sauces and sea vegetables (assorted pouches of sea weeds). The more natural-food oriented the store, the better.

Ask for agar-agar, and pronounce it auger-auger if you ask a clerk. RR

Now Foods makes an Agar product. Do a search on eBay and Google. I believe I bought 2 pounds of this stuff for $40.00 plus shipping. That was two years ago and I still have a ton left.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, and mycelium rhymes with helium. It's hard to learn a hobby without any personal interaction. "Coir" is another funny word. I imagine it sounds like Gwar... but I've never heard anybody say it.

I call it A-ger too. That seems to be the most common way in the mushroom community. However, the asians pronounce it 'auger-auger', so if asking at an asian food store, that's the way.
Coir is most commonly pronounced as 'core' in the mushroom community, right or wrong. RR

Asians have no word that we use in the English language for this. The Merriam-Webster pronunciations is auger-auger. I know quite a few people who call soda "soder", but I'm not about to start that trend.
Coir is pronounced "Coy-yer".
When in doubt, refer to your dictionary.

That is hardly the same thing. We are talking about a mispronunciation, not alternative words. I routinely refer to children as kids, but I'm not trying to tell you that children is pronounced "kids". Let's try and keep the eye on the ball here folks.

As long as the agar has the proper gel strength, it will work fine.
