Download speeds

I have notice that when I download certain files they start off extremely quickly. When I would look at the download manager 1.5 megabytes had downloaded almost instantly and then they would throttle down to 200-450 kbs. Why does that happen? Does it really hurt the ISP's to cap our bandwidth so severely when they clearly have the capability to serve much higher speeds? Is there anyway to uncap my speeds without getting in trouble or can you only uncap T-1?

If you have Comcast that's their "powerboost" which gives you 2x bandwidth for the first ~10 seconds of a download. Also in Firefox when you click to download a file, it starts transferring in the background while you select a location and that can throw off the speed calculation briefly. The thing to be concerned about is whether you're getting your rated speed or not. 450KB is about 3.5 megabit. You can perform a more accurate speed test at http://www.broadbandreports.com/speedtest. And no don't uncap your modem unless you want to be dropped and blacklisted by your ISP.

I don't have Comcast but I am using Firefox. I figured bad things would happen if I fooled with my modem. Thanks. I bet we'll all have quantum computers and fiber optic internet soon enough though.
I have Bellsouth with 3 megabytes per second. I guess they like me.

Last Result: Download Speed: 12813 kbps (1601.6KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 1713 kbps (214.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
That's the speed I'm reading out using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest which I think is the best speed test site. A lot easier to use too.

I'm stuck with slow service and a ridiculous price. Thats what happens when you have uninformed consumers. What is your ISP?

I use ComCast (the upgraded one), plus we have the TurboBoost or whatever it's called that increases the speed even more. End up paying $57.95/month for it.
