I think that all moderators of this forum are probably myco-pr0n addicts. I know I am. Isn't that why we hang out here in the first place?

Happy mushrooming!

This forum, yes... though, I have two equally important goals:
getting off on tripped out looking mushrooms, and expanding my understanding of mycology globally, from a scientific and phylogenetic perspective.

I understand where you're comming from curecat, but not every basic question can be answered using the search function. Here's an example of a simple question.

When and where can oyster mushrooms be found?
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/dosearch.php

There's very little there can help an inexperienced hand get his or her question answered in the right manner. Besides, some people don't have the time or know how to use that function properly or to get the answer they're looking for. I just think it's easier for a person to ask a question, get the answer they're looking for and be done with it. Rather than getting their thread locked and pointed to a "read the rules" answer. When the question could've been answered in the time it took to lock the thread in the first place.

Here's an alternative, instead of asking the same questions,
that have been asked over and over, such as weather, growth, etc.
Why not just ask for links on a relative topic, I don't believe that is expressly prohibited by the rules, and it would help noobs, like myself learn tremendously more. Although, I'm a fan of the search post option. Keywords retrieve results, atleast better results, than
whole sentences.

It does require the user to know how internet search engines function, and what key terms to search. And although one question may be simple enough, we get SO MANY of these questions a day, it just becomes overwhelming. I and many others do not have the time or motivation to answer and/or correct misinformation on these issues every single time they come up.

Yes, it puts responsibility on the individual. Where do you think I learned what I know?? I certainly was not taught, and until about 6 months ago, i didn't own any mycology texts or field guides. I learned through searching the internet and first hand hunting experience. I figure if people sincerely want to learn, they should show some initiative, rather than spoon feed them all the answers.

This is simply a conflict of opinion, and although i disagree, i understand your point.

No one wants to see the forum clogged with inappropriate weather questions or questions that can easily be answered via the forum search function. People should be encouraged to seek their own answers. A clutter-free forum with self-reliant, motivated members is an honorable goal.

However, I've seen many borderline posts locked in this forum. This practice does not serve the above purpose. What's much worse is the practice of mercilessly flaming anyone's post that does not strictly conform to rules. I'm sure many people have been so discouraged by the response they've received in this forum that they've decided it's not worth the effort. Ultimately, this hurts the community, because we lose members who have the potential to make contributions in the future.

In short, this ridiculous obsession with the letter of the law, as opposed to the spirit, is ANNOYING and it hurts the community. We don't need more rules if they are being used merely as a vehicle to flame noobs.

Its to bad your wrong. And why would they be used to flame noobs? You just made that up as a reason. Its so noobs stop asking the same shit over and over without even reading the rules. Look at most any post i reply to a noob with, its clear they didnt read the rules prior.

Implee, he makes a good point.  One that I have been trying to explain to you for some time.

I do appreciate your linking new people to the rules, but you often do it in an abrasive manner.  Try to be polite, rather than condescending, it can be a turn off for new folks.
There are certainly some jerks, but you should not be the agressor.  There are rules, as well as reprimand for those who cannot follow them.

So instead of:
"OMG READ THE FUCKING RULES N00B!!!"

Try something like:
"Hi, if you haven't already read the forum rules, please take a look at them"

:ohwell:  We want to invite people into the hobby, not scare them away.

Here's a rule that you should take to heart, implee.

"a. Common courtesy
If you see someone violating a rule outlined in the thread (like asking for an ID without providing enough information) please refer them to this FAQ and do NOT flame them or even argue. It's the job of us, the moderators and the administrators to deal with anyone who is not following the rules, so please don't break them yourselves trying to enforce them.

If you are making an identification request, have some common courtesy and use proper grammar. This is a message board, not an AOL chatroom. We do not appreciate posts asking "Wut r these shroomz??????" '

I would be sympathetic if english was not your native language, but you've stated that you're capable of using proper grammar but choose not to. As it states in the rules, that's discourteous. You clog the forums with your 'leet' text message garbage grammar. Members must waste their time trying to decipher your messages because, according to you, you don't want to bother with proper grammar. How about a little respect?

What's your definition of a noob though?

I'm sure there are plenty of noobs, who
do not ask ignorant questions, but are still
new to mycology.

Then you have the noobs, who are ignorant,
and ask stupid repetitive questions. If this
is in which you refer, then I too hate noobs.

"n00b" tends to refer to ignorant or idiotic new people. At least according to the most commonly accepted definition. Yes... I have looked this up.

You can very well be new without being a n00b, based upon your knowledge and/or maturity.
