I did my casing earlier today and i made its about 1/2in thick. I feel like that isnt thick enough for 6in of straw. Should I add more to it?

It should be much thicker, because 6in of substrate will fruit quite a bit more than say 2in. The casing layer provides moisture and a base for fruit formation. Prolific fruiting will remove or damage much of a 1/2 inch casing layer.
Try for 1" to 1-1/2" casing layer for 6" of straw.

I wouldn't add more. In fact, straw holds so much moisture that I've never noticed one whit of difference from casing it or not. Straw, due to its uneven texture, fruits just fine uncased. RR

I agree. I thought I was the only one who'd seen straw go crazy without a casing, I hadn't even talked about it up until now but it's been one of my faves lately for that reason alone (one less step is one less screwup, after all). The only time I would bother to case straw is if I had a bad fruiting setup, namely too low humidification. I would probably case it if I were doing a straw monotub out of concern for moisture, but I've only tried monos with poo up until now.
It seems to give strangely good pinsets for uncased, too, though that may be a strain thing in my case--my B+ of choice seems prone to good pinning, even from cakes. Straw is living proof that cubes are NOT a casing-mandatory species. Sure, it's a good water reservoir, but beyond that and maybe the slight pinset boost... not all it's cracked up to be.
For those who are interested in fruiting technique, I like to take colonized bags of straw and pop them in my greenhouse like they're cakes. It's so fucking ridiculously easy, and they give you monsters nearly the size of poo casings (not that shroom size is actually important unless you're concerned about having a pretty trophy--their yield is the important, and impressive part).

Here's an electron micrograph of a cross section of a single strand of straw. You can see how the mycelium has lots of passageways to colonize, and there's also plenty of room for water storage. RR
