At 22 few people have much in the way of assets or savings. Its a great time to live free and discover the path you want to tread.
If you still have nothing in 20 years you can worry a little.
If you still have nothing in 40 years then I hope you enjoy dog food.

I'm 26 and I live paycheque to paycheque. I save money in RRSP every paycheque.

If you're smart you would invest at least 10-15% of your monthly salary into stocks or mutual funds. Aim for the long term, 20 years or so. You can easily be a millionaire by the time you're 45 if you start putting some freakin money into something.
People don't get rich working, normally speaking. People get rich because they make money work FOR them.

There is no excuse to not have 6 months worth of income in savings. Not for retirement, but for emergencies.

no excuse?? hahaha!! how about being fucking thousands of dollars in debt due to educational loans? or how about being a full-time student with a part-time job and having to support yourself entirely? i think those are pretty good excuses. some people don't have the luxury of having money left over to put into savings.

You should still have a 6 month savings fund. Doesnt matter if you have student loans or not. Taking out student loans is fine because you are borrowing against something that appreciates like a house (your marketability). But you should still be able to save away around 6 months worth of income, even if it means two jobs and take off one semester.
Then you have an emergency fund in case something life changing happens. You also can self insure and self warranty small things which means you keep more of your paycheck in the long run.

what if you just had an emergency, like lawyer fees? Is it OK then to not have 6 months income saved up?
Quit being foolish, there are thousands of reasons to not have 6 months income saved up.

Unless you're earning more interest on your savings than you're paying on your debt (which is unlikely) you're the one that needs to go back to math class.

Sure, thats why you saved it up to begin with right?
Spending is out of control in america. The modern american has more disposable income than virtually any other human in history. I just read that 75% of all americans have cell phones. Luxery abounds.
And I certainly dont think its foolish to keep an emergency fund whilst still going to school and taking out loans. Maybe we are confusing an emergency fund and retirement fund. My opinion, there is no reason to save for retirement while taking out loans in school.
Thats what I do at least... I try to maintain half a years income in emergency funds (sometimes it goes up, sometimes it goes down), and I dont save for retirement. I will start that when I graduate and pay off my loans. (If I can get a job, and the world doesnt end in 2012 )

The average 22 yr old doesn't have jack shit.
Most people I know are either in debt or constantly waiting for the paycheck to roll in so they can blow it on weed and dvd's.
I couldn't live like that. My theory is I don't want to work for ever, so the more I save now, the more interest I will be making. If I save for 6 more years I could actually afford to live off the interest.
It would be nice to know you don't have to work if you don't want to.

Oh, and the average 22 year old doesn't really have much. You've got a lot of 22 year olds just graduating college, so they're deep in the hole money-wise, or you've got college drop outs who are in the hole and not making a whole lot by and by large, or folks that just worked right from high school who vary between making a good living and not making shit.

I'm 22 and make $20 an hour in the job I got 3 weeks ago. In those three weeks, I've paid off $600 worth of debt so far and put away $600 in the bank. I did spend $140 on my GRE test, but I view that as a good investment b/c it will help get me into grad school.

I had a lot more than most. It's mainly because I got scholarships to college though, and the money I was savng for school went back into the original "college fund" investment.

I got a pretty shitty temp job, live with 4 room mates, and live in a "big" city. I try to put away $500 a month. It is usually closer to 350 - 400 though. The only reason I can do that is because I don't have any student loans.

LOL when I was 22 I lived paycheck to paycheck, AND my mom put gas in my car every weekend and bought groceries for me. (well, she didn't just do that for me, I had to earn it by going to her house and cleaning, helping my dad with outside work, etc)
Anytime I had a scrap of extra money I was very foolish about it and went to the bars or bought beer. Hell, sometimes I even suffered a late fee on rent, phone, etc and used that money to go out. I had one job that paid $12/hr.
it sucked BAD. I would get SO FRUSTRATED because anytime I asked my parents for more than $50 we had this whole talk about how I need to budget and they would always write out my income and bills on paper, and on paper I SHOULD have been making it. so it was just poor budgeting on my end... like going out to eat instead of buying groceries and late fees.
Anyway, I was miserable and CONSTANTLY had money on my mind, so I busted my ass at work, got promoted, but it was only $1.50 more per hour... then I got a second part-time job... then I got a better 'full time" job that pays about 40k/yr- on top of the little part-time gig, about 8-10k/yr.
Now I'm able to have a savings and put money back into 401(k)... my new company matches dollar-for-dollar up to 6%, so I invest the full 6%. ALL of the money I put in goes into the 401k account, as well as half the money they put in. then the other half of their money is invested into whatever company stocks I want. it's a pretty good deal.
I JUST turned 25, BTW
Hang in there kid, it's totally normal to barely scrape by when you're 22. it builds character and it builds "hunger" (literally AND metaphorically LOL) It's normal to blow money on stupid shit and to be foolish and endure late fees just to be able to spend a piece of that rent money. After getting kicked in the ass financially for a bit, you'll get your ss in gear (or graduate college) and land a job that's decent.
Or for whatever reason some people aren't phased by that kick in the ass, and live their whole life barely scraping by, content with mediocrity. as long as you're not one of those people, you're gonna be ok.
Also, if you don't have money for college, or you MUST work to get by, I suggest getting into a business where experience far outweighs a college degree. I'm in telecom, and if I applied for the same job as someone with a degree, but less experience, then I'd get the job. Telecom is constantly changing, so sitting in a classroom is now match for being on the job... plus most entry-level jobs your first 6-8 weeks are in a classroom learning basic telephony. I've had 30+ weeks (40 hours per week, so 1200 hours). that's A LOT of learning, and instead of me paying for it, they were paying me :0)

I'm 21, I live paycheck to paycheck as well. I've only got about $1000 in student loans to pay off - I'm a dropout - and a little extra debt on the side. I spend somewhat frivolously. My credit doesn't look so good. My parents do not pay for any of my bills.
I don't think the average 22 year old has much in the way of savings. If they do, it probably wasn't their doing. Just what I've noticed.

when i was a really bad junkie, right around 19-21 i was living paycheck to paycheck. substituting drugs for food. sold of all my belongings till i had only a mattress and cell phone. eventually couldnt even pay my $300 rent, got kicked out, lived in a car, and occasionally in and out of rehab, hospitals, and psych wards. i was making a lot of money too--$150/hour average, but i would just end up spending everything i had on drugs.
im 22 now, and detoxed almost 6 months now--from the substances i had a weakness to anyway. im hoping ill be able to go without relapsing again so i can save up decent scratch to enjoy the finer things in life (like more vacation trips, enjoying other cultures )

The amount of money I owe my credit card company is definitely more money than I can say I have to my name at this moment. Not too much more, but it's hurtin'.

word, me too, i lucked out with education. my parents paid for the first 2 years of my university... im transferring to a new school though, and ill be applying for financial aid then (i was on welfare for a short while so i think im eligible). my goal is to land a decent job, get a place with low living costs, save at least $300 every month in savings so i can take more trips abroad during summer breaks of my study...
once i finish my degree, then i plan on moving to another country that has high demand for my field of study, and thats when the big bucks will be rolling in (im hoping).
but still. theres no rush in finishing your studies quick, or making tons of cash quick. take life slow and easy, steady does it.

im an excellent saver, and make pretty decent money. I have all my bills taken care of, cheap rent, split food with my girlfriend, buy most luxuries and want, and considerable assets. (this is all my own doing, nothing has been given to me.)
However, i do have a large trust fund to crack into, when i decide to pursue post secondary education.
Im going to start looking into rrsp's, or mutual funds/investing soon, i could easily put away 500 dollars a month without affecting my life dramatically.

23 years old, i make $72,000 a year...i am $38,000 in debt from school. $1500 invested in the stock market atm, but ive only been working for 3 months. up till now I lived paycheck to paycheck, but theres alot of one time expenses when you start living in the real world...(like a car that will actually get me to work). I now save $1000 a month on average, into a high interest (5%) checking account.
The student loans dont bother me because im paying about 3% apr interest on them, and my savings acount is 5% apr...which means i save money by paying the minimum on my loans...so those of you who said pay off the debt first and then save...thats not always the best way to do it.

Sure, thats why you saved it up to begin with right?
Spending is out of control in america. The modern american has more disposable income than virtually any other human in history. I just read that 75% of all americans have cell phones. Luxery abounds.
People say things like this like it's a terrible thing or something. I don't know if you are or not, but I still honestly do not see what's so bad about materialism.
On another note, it really is easier than most think to find a way to save $150, $100, $50, or shit, even $25 a month. That being said, I sure don't fucking do it. I honestly don't see the point in saving, either way the idea is to spend money, so why the fuck shouldn't I spend it now when I'm young? I'm also lucky in an unlucky sort of way to have plenty of money saved so that I don't need to save right now, however if I did save I would probably have a shit ton of cash by the time I was 30 or 35.

I believe it's ₤5.35 in England, which equates to about $11.

Its good to see a healthy dialog about the reasons and way people save.
As i get older (still 22), i mix with mostly an older peer group, and a few of them are buying houses and starting familys. Most people my own age BUM cigarettes, and scrimp, save and borrow just to drink or get fucked up.
I look at peoples habits ie. Strip joint once a week, drinking everyday, smoking cigarettes, weed, energy drinks, etc.
Seems alot of people have trouble spending money on themselves.
In the last year, ive bought myself 2 mtn bikes, a flat screen monitor, a nice bed, expensive scale, my own energy effecient fridge, furniture/picknic table, A creative zen player, dvd's/cd's/records, a truck... and tommorow im travelling 1800kms to party in California for a week.
My visa rarely goes over $150 dollars for more than a week or so.
Treeplanting treated my quite well.
I grew up with the "put 10% away" ethic. Although this was hard to do, after digging into it to buy slurpees around grade 5.
Im watching my assets and savings continue to grow...
My grandparents put away $2000 dollars for me in templeton and trimark mutual funds when i was born, and subsequently id have a few hundred dollars added every birthday or so.. its now at over $22,000 dollars, and i would like to start making MY money grow like that.
Can anyone recommend any resources to learn about saving/investing from?
(the reason i want to save, and grow... is for security, and oppurtunity. I want LAND + PROPERY NOW as its an asset that continually grows. Just look at someone that bought property in the 70's..., I also want to travel, and live debt free, and also want to start my own business's.)

It varies by state I think. At least when I got here for school (Ohio) they were saying minimum wage is like $7.15, and I'm pretty sure in New York it's $7.50. I could just be retarded though.

Takin' care of business there jslice! Interesting about the low-interest student loan to high-yield bank trade
I'm 24.8 years old and left university towards the end of my third year to start an internet retail business in 2004. At the time, I had $10,000 in cash along with an additional $20K locked up in partnership investments that I still haven't touched, from my grandfather who passed in 1992. Spent the $10,000 cash to buy my first products for the retail business three years ago, and have since brought in close to a quarter million in sales, of which some 35% is net profit.
Half of that profit is now in the stock market, and I'm leaning towards dealings with food. Perhaps starting a local catering service, which here in the greater Los Angeles area could do pretty well I believe, 'specially if I could score contracts with local businesses for lunch events or what have you. I love cooking, so I don't want to turn it into a chore where I start to get sick of it! I need to find a way to make this happen without sucking up all my time, as I also have a penchant for teaching myself improvisational guitar.

I got a degree in computer engineering in May, and I work at a research and development branch of a company that makes low power microchips that go in cellphones, popular mp3 players, and UMPCs. I know people in my major that are doing ALOT better than I am right now, but I refuse to work for any company that makes technology that supports warfare.
As far as the low interest student loans v/ high interest checking account, I think i just got lucky that student loans were at an all time low when I started college...one of mine is about 1.75% apr fixed. And luckily there is now a HUGE amount of companies that do high interest checking accounts. ING, ETrade,USAA...etc...
Next question...I want to buy a farm and retire by 40, is it possible?

You should put 5 dollars aside every week. Thats what, a day's bus fare? A pack of cigs? You can spare it. Put it in a savings account. Tally it in with your bills so you consider it something you HAVE to pay each week. Only instead of paying a company, you're paying yourself. Its not much, but it adds up (as stated earlier, compound interest is bangin).
Also, get receipts for a solid month. And I mean SOLID. Every single purchase, get a receipt, even if its for a pack of gum. Then at the end of the month, sort it out into bills (things you HAD to pay) and frills (vices you got, snacks, beer, etc - critter comforts, but not necessities). You'll discover some scary things about your spending, and how nickles and dimes add up.
Its not easy to see without doing the gruntwork, but you'd be amazed how your spending rises to accomidate spare cash you would have otherwise. There's nothing wrong with living paycheck to paycheck, but make sure you're paying everyone who needs paid - including you.

Absolutely. And from the sounds of things you are off to a good start. I've known a few people who were able to retire by their mid-40s (and by retire I mean retire wealthy). The common factor is ambition, hard work, and some good business and financial decisions along the way.

This is true. My grandfather started a business and a family when he was dirt poor, and retired a multi millionarie before he was 50 and this is.. 20 years ago.

Me either. Unless you are buying luxury without first having at least modest savings for emergencies. That is terrible.
My reasoning is that if 75% of people can afford this expensive luxury, then surly 75% of people must have a modest savings... But of course that is not the case...
