I have one thing I can really be grateful for - all my student loans were paid off for me a year after I got out of school. That's one bag o bricks I don't need to lug around.

word, me too, i lucked out with education. my parents paid for the first 2 years of my university... im transferring to a new school though, and ill be applying for financial aid then (i was on welfare for a short while so i think im eligible). my goal is to land a decent job, get a place with low living costs, save at least $300 every month in savings so i can take more trips abroad during summer breaks of my study...
once i finish my degree, then i plan on moving to another country that has high demand for my field of study, and thats when the big bucks will be rolling in (im hoping).
but still. theres no rush in finishing your studies quick, or making tons of cash quick. take life slow and easy, steady does it.

im an excellent saver, and make pretty decent money. I have all my bills taken care of, cheap rent, split food with my girlfriend, buy most luxuries and want, and considerable assets. (this is all my own doing, nothing has been given to me.)
However, i do have a large trust fund to crack into, when i decide to pursue post secondary education.
Im going to start looking into rrsp's, or mutual funds/investing soon, i could easily put away 500 dollars a month without affecting my life dramatically.

23 years old, i make $72,000 a year...i am $38,000 in debt from school. $1500 invested in the stock market atm, but ive only been working for 3 months. up till now I lived paycheck to paycheck, but theres alot of one time expenses when you start living in the real world...(like a car that will actually get me to work). I now save $1000 a month on average, into a high interest (5%) checking account.
The student loans dont bother me because im paying about 3% apr interest on them, and my savings acount is 5% apr...which means i save money by paying the minimum on my loans...so those of you who said pay off the debt first and then save...thats not always the best way to do it.

I'm 19 with somewhere around $3,500 in savings. I've got 2 years of college to go and should finish up with a little under $20k in loans.

Sure, thats why you saved it up to begin with right?
Spending is out of control in america. The modern american has more disposable income than virtually any other human in history. I just read that 75% of all americans have cell phones. Luxery abounds.
People say things like this like it's a terrible thing or something. I don't know if you are or not, but I still honestly do not see what's so bad about materialism.
On another note, it really is easier than most think to find a way to save $150, $100, $50, or shit, even $25 a month. That being said, I sure don't fucking do it. I honestly don't see the point in saving, either way the idea is to spend money, so why the fuck shouldn't I spend it now when I'm young? I'm also lucky in an unlucky sort of way to have plenty of money saved so that I don't need to save right now, however if I did save I would probably have a shit ton of cash by the time I was 30 or 35.

Just curious, what is the minimum wage for the US?
I believe it's ₤5.35 in England, which equates to about $11.

Its good to see a healthy dialog about the reasons and way people save.
As i get older (still 22), i mix with mostly an older peer group, and a few of them are buying houses and starting familys. Most people my own age BUM cigarettes, and scrimp, save and borrow just to drink or get fucked up.
I look at peoples habits ie. Strip joint once a week, drinking everyday, smoking cigarettes, weed, energy drinks, etc.
Seems alot of people have trouble spending money on themselves.
In the last year, ive bought myself 2 mtn bikes, a flat screen monitor, a nice bed, expensive scale, my own energy effecient fridge, furniture/picknic table, A creative zen player, dvd's/cd's/records, a truck... and tommorow im travelling 1800kms to party in California for a week.
My visa rarely goes over $150 dollars for more than a week or so.
Treeplanting treated my quite well.
I grew up with the "put 10% away" ethic. Although this was hard to do, after digging into it to buy slurpees around grade 5.
Im watching my assets and savings continue to grow...
My grandparents put away $2000 dollars for me in templeton and trimark mutual funds when i was born, and subsequently id have a few hundred dollars added every birthday or so.. its now at over $22,000 dollars, and i would like to start making MY money grow like that.
Can anyone recommend any resources to learn about saving/investing from?
(the reason i want to save, and grow... is for security, and oppurtunity. I want LAND + PROPERY NOW as its an asset that continually grows. Just look at someone that bought property in the 70's..., I also want to travel, and live debt free, and also want to start my own business's.)

It varies by state I think. At least when I got here for school (Ohio) they were saying minimum wage is like $7.15, and I'm pretty sure in New York it's $7.50. I could just be retarded though.

Takin' care of business there jslice! Interesting about the low-interest student loan to high-yield bank trade
I'm 24.8 years old and left university towards the end of my third year to start an internet retail business in 2004. At the time, I had $10,000 in cash along with an additional $20K locked up in partnership investments that I still haven't touched, from my grandfather who passed in 1992. Spent the $10,000 cash to buy my first products for the retail business three years ago, and have since brought in close to a quarter million in sales, of which some 35% is net profit.
Half of that profit is now in the stock market, and I'm leaning towards dealings with food. Perhaps starting a local catering service, which here in the greater Los Angeles area could do pretty well I believe, 'specially if I could score contracts with local businesses for lunch events or what have you. I love cooking, so I don't want to turn it into a chore where I start to get sick of it! I need to find a way to make this happen without sucking up all my time, as I also have a penchant for teaching myself improvisational guitar.

I got a degree in computer engineering in May, and I work at a research and development branch of a company that makes low power microchips that go in cellphones, popular mp3 players, and UMPCs. I know people in my major that are doing ALOT better than I am right now, but I refuse to work for any company that makes technology that supports warfare.
As far as the low interest student loans v/ high interest checking account, I think i just got lucky that student loans were at an all time low when I started college...one of mine is about 1.75% apr fixed. And luckily there is now a HUGE amount of companies that do high interest checking accounts. ING, ETrade,USAA...etc...
Next question...I want to buy a farm and retire by 40, is it possible?

Ahh, I was going to guess engineering of some sort.
And yeah, retire at 40 w/ farm is possible. Move to West Virginia.

You should put 5 dollars aside every week. Thats what, a day's bus fare? A pack of cigs? You can spare it. Put it in a savings account. Tally it in with your bills so you consider it something you HAVE to pay each week. Only instead of paying a company, you're paying yourself. Its not much, but it adds up (as stated earlier, compound interest is bangin).
Also, get receipts for a solid month. And I mean SOLID. Every single purchase, get a receipt, even if its for a pack of gum. Then at the end of the month, sort it out into bills (things you HAD to pay) and frills (vices you got, snacks, beer, etc - critter comforts, but not necessities). You'll discover some scary things about your spending, and how nickles and dimes add up.
Its not easy to see without doing the gruntwork, but you'd be amazed how your spending rises to accomidate spare cash you would have otherwise. There's nothing wrong with living paycheck to paycheck, but make sure you're paying everyone who needs paid - including you.

Absolutely. And from the sounds of things you are off to a good start. I've known a few people who were able to retire by their mid-40s (and by retire I mean retire wealthy). The common factor is ambition, hard work, and some good business and financial decisions along the way.
