I'm 22 and make $20 an hour in the job I got 3 weeks ago. In those three weeks, I've paid off $600 worth of debt so far and put away $600 in the bank. I did spend $140 on my GRE test, but I view that as a good investment b/c it will help get me into grad school.

I had a lot more than most. It's mainly because I got scholarships to college though, and the money I was savng for school went back into the original "college fund" investment.

I'm 22, paycheck to fucking paycheck. Hopefully my new job will somewhat fix this, so I can start putting back into my RRSP.

I got a pretty shitty temp job, live with 4 room mates, and live in a "big" city. I try to put away $500 a month. It is usually closer to 350 - 400 though. The only reason I can do that is because I don't have any student loans.

LOL when I was 22 I lived paycheck to paycheck, AND my mom put gas in my car every weekend and bought groceries for me. (well, she didn't just do that for me, I had to earn it by going to her house and cleaning, helping my dad with outside work, etc)
Anytime I had a scrap of extra money I was very foolish about it and went to the bars or bought beer. Hell, sometimes I even suffered a late fee on rent, phone, etc and used that money to go out. I had one job that paid $12/hr.
it sucked BAD. I would get SO FRUSTRATED because anytime I asked my parents for more than $50 we had this whole talk about how I need to budget and they would always write out my income and bills on paper, and on paper I SHOULD have been making it. so it was just poor budgeting on my end... like going out to eat instead of buying groceries and late fees.
Anyway, I was miserable and CONSTANTLY had money on my mind, so I busted my ass at work, got promoted, but it was only $1.50 more per hour... then I got a second part-time job... then I got a better 'full time" job that pays about 40k/yr- on top of the little part-time gig, about 8-10k/yr.
Now I'm able to have a savings and put money back into 401(k)... my new company matches dollar-for-dollar up to 6%, so I invest the full 6%. ALL of the money I put in goes into the 401k account, as well as half the money they put in. then the other half of their money is invested into whatever company stocks I want. it's a pretty good deal.
I JUST turned 25, BTW
Hang in there kid, it's totally normal to barely scrape by when you're 22. it builds character and it builds "hunger" (literally AND metaphorically LOL) It's normal to blow money on stupid shit and to be foolish and endure late fees just to be able to spend a piece of that rent money. After getting kicked in the ass financially for a bit, you'll get your ss in gear (or graduate college) and land a job that's decent.
Or for whatever reason some people aren't phased by that kick in the ass, and live their whole life barely scraping by, content with mediocrity. as long as you're not one of those people, you're gonna be ok.
Also, if you don't have money for college, or you MUST work to get by, I suggest getting into a business where experience far outweighs a college degree. I'm in telecom, and if I applied for the same job as someone with a degree, but less experience, then I'd get the job. Telecom is constantly changing, so sitting in a classroom is now match for being on the job... plus most entry-level jobs your first 6-8 weeks are in a classroom learning basic telephony. I've had 30+ weeks (40 hours per week, so 1200 hours). that's A LOT of learning, and instead of me paying for it, they were paying me :0)

I do live paycheck to paycheck. But I just got my first real full time salaried job and look forward to starting up a little savings. I am 24 years old.

I'm 21, I live paycheck to paycheck as well. I've only got about $1000 in student loans to pay off - I'm a dropout - and a little extra debt on the side. I spend somewhat frivolously. My credit doesn't look so good. My parents do not pay for any of my bills.
I don't think the average 22 year old has much in the way of savings. If they do, it probably wasn't their doing. Just what I've noticed.

when i was a really bad junkie, right around 19-21 i was living paycheck to paycheck. substituting drugs for food. sold of all my belongings till i had only a mattress and cell phone. eventually couldnt even pay my $300 rent, got kicked out, lived in a car, and occasionally in and out of rehab, hospitals, and psych wards. i was making a lot of money too--$150/hour average, but i would just end up spending everything i had on drugs.
im 22 now, and detoxed almost 6 months now--from the substances i had a weakness to anyway. im hoping ill be able to go without relapsing again so i can save up decent scratch to enjoy the finer things in life (like more vacation trips, enjoying other cultures )

The amount of money I owe my credit card company is definitely more money than I can say I have to my name at this moment. Not too much more, but it's hurtin'.

I'll be in the credit card hole after I max out my credit card paying for next semester. It's going to be fun.
