My new setup!

i kindof started a new setup to hopefully produce better results.
instead of the 3 containers by the window and fanning it all the time, i put all the cakes into a big rubbermaid. i have 2 12" cold cathodes hooked to the inside lid with a small CPU fan blowing in air. Everything is on a 6 hour timer. on 6 hours, off 6 hours, ect.
you guys think this will work out ok?!

its a cold cathode kit used for automotive neon lighting. it uses less power than a neon and doesnt produce heat.

You might lose too much humidity with the fan blowing that often.

it seems like the mushrooms stoped growing or stalled since i used this new setup! whats the deal? a couple big mushroms looked like they collapsed and folded over and i noticed one mushrooms stem was turning a blueish color and was somewhat dry. is this normal?
why would this change be happening? is the blue light ok?

Where did you get the lights? I notice you said they are the automotive ones. Can I get them at Kragen or some local auto part store?

the color of the light doesn't matter dude. If I had to guess, I'd say your pumping too much air in there. 6 on/6 off is ok for the lights, but you need to fun the fan way less than that. Like maybe 5 min every 2-3 hours?
You have to understand that the more you run your fan, the more it will lower the humidity. I would guess that after 6 hours of running the fan, your humididty probably drops to like 60%, then the fan goes off and the perlite will start to build up humidity in the FC again. Keep in mind that it take 1-3 hours for rH to reaccumulate after a simple manual fanning, after 6 hours of the fan running I can't believe there would be much humididty left in your FC. And then, when the rH level finally reaches where it should be, the fan comes on an hour or so later and depletes it all again, and so on and so on, as your 6 on/6 off cycle continues
So what I'm saying is, you probably have too low of rH, becuase you are fanning or adding FAE too often, not allowing it to reaccumulate.
There is a reason why those who don't have fans only need to maunually fan 4-6 times a day.... because most do it quick with the lid, and for just long enough to get some fresh air in there, not for 6 hours so that humididty is nearly completely lost.
Honestly, if I were you I'd leave the lights as they are, but get rid of the fan... Drill hundreds of tiny holes in your FC and just use the perlite for rH and the holes for FAE, that's the simplest way of automating a terrarium that I know of, it has worked incredibly well for me and many others.... Look into "RR's fruiting chamber" for more info on that, and..... I always hated hearing people say this and never wanted to say it myself, but.....remember, K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stoner!)

aight, thx for the info. i just cut the power from the fan.
question though.... i have (3) 1" holes in the back of the container covered with a filter and the hole on the lid where the fan is also covered with a filter. would they be ok to leVE AS IS AND NOT have to fan regularly. or should i cover them up?

Maybe you could put the fan on a timer... then they would get fanned once a day for 1 hr, or whatever you want. I dont even have a fan, just a couple holes near the bottom covered with a filter... I just leave the tropicaire humidifyer on all the time, and fan only every once in a while. I havent had any trouble with this except when i forget to fan atleast once every other day or so, the mushies get a little fuzzy on the stems which makes me think if you had it on a timer youd be set. Another idea is maybe try and add the fan onto the same timer as the lights (if you have one for em)...

Sometimes it is funny when people don't listen (or read...as the case may be).
Sorry, but I TOLD YOU SO.
