Ive been reading on erowid that you have to bake the mushrooms at 170-200 F for the ibotenic acid to turn in to muscimol. does it have to be at this temperature to make the reaction happen or can you just hang them out to dry?

If that's what it says on erowid then it's probably right. I've also heard of somehow redepositing the juice from them over the tops of the caps as you bake them. Not sure about the best way to do that though. It would seem to me that any juice running out of them would dry up pretty quickly even at 170.

If you are thinking about drying for storage purposes I read somewhere that you can just freeze the mushrooms kept in freezer bags. Then when you want some, take out as much as you want and then fry or bake or boil to 'detoxify' / turn ibotenic acid to muscimol.

Actually you CAN let them air/sundry. The anciant tribes of Siberia used to hang them over a fire or leave them to hang outside in the heat of the sun. THe only problems you might have with that is that it takes a LONG time to dry them if you don't live in a very hot and dry climate and if you have a lot of squirels and deer and bugs than keep a sharp eye out

yeah air drying works well but if they are infested when air drying they will rot, if infested and you bake em you kill those maggots in em.

I'd go with the oven unless that is somehow a bigger problem than a possible worse experience.

the infested ones are nasty when air drying: the maggots get pissed.
oven drying seems out of the question: the juice takes a long time to vaporize and the amanita get all squishy and not dry at all.
