Those of you who have been incarcerated...

... is it like this article describes?
http://jimgoad.net/nicest.html?top
Some excerpts:
I recently spent almost two-and-a-half years in the clink. My journey took me from crowded county jails to a minimum-security prison all the way to a maximum-security penitentiary with big gray walls and rifle towers and serial killers and even a member of the Manson family.
And not once during all this time…not ONCE…did another inmate threaten me. The popular myth is that convicts will force you to either "fight or fuck." In reality, the most coercive thing another inmate did to me was to reach down from his bunk, wake me up, and politely ask me to roll over because I was snoring too loudly.
-----
Convicts display the sort of camaraderie that only emerges under siege. They are polite to one another because they know the consequences of being rude. It’s as if everyone’s carrying a gun, so no one gets shot. People are respectful in prison for the same reason that soldiers step carefully through a minefield.
Chaos is in nobody’s best interest. It’s fucking bad enough to be locked down. No need to make it worse. Nobody can afford the headaches. Everyone just wants to do their time and avoid trouble. The lifers, more than anyone, want a minimum of turbulence. They may be mamma-clubbers and baby-fuckers, but they still like a clean cell and a good night’s rest. Rape and assault would be, you know, too much trouble.
Just curious.
-------------------- Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man. For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire. Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it. ~ R.W. Emerson, "Self-Reliance"

i was only pinked for about 4 hours, but there were still a bunch of really scary looking black guys there. they didn't give me any shit though. i couldn't take a dump because one of them was using the roll of toilet paper as a pillow.

in my experience (60 some days in a really shitty old county jail) this writer speaks the truth, especially that last paragraph you posted. of course there are disturbances, but usually the habitually violent ones are moved or separated and isolated.
a lot of problems arise from people's race and class prejudices, but even then, any real trouble is just too much extra stress that is easily avoided by not being a total fuckface.
some will maintain a constant tension between eachother without ever acting on it except to have heated verbal exchanges. this can be really tiresome for everyone else within earshot.
the guys i was locked up with for the longest were not hesitant to give you shit. as long as i played it cool i earned their respect.
it really depends a lot on the type of facility you are in. where i was is more of a transitional facility for people awaiting sentancing or transportation to a long term facility.

i saw a young white 18 year old snitch take on the manhood of black man. oh boy was everyone cheering for that.
but most the time it was pretty cool.. but snitches get dealt with.
