Tiger the greatest ever??
    #7409851 - 09/14/07 03:48 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

I'll admit to loving golf since I was little. I played to a legit single digit handicap, and worked at a prestigious course in Scottsdale that had a few tour pros around.

This doesn't qualify me for anything other than to say that considering the cruel game golf is, the fact that you must beat EVERYONE in order to win every week (tennis players best 5 or 6 players to win a title no?) and that there are some really good golfers, and would be great if it wasn't for Eldrick winning everything, out there right now, I will go on record and say this..

Even though I grew up on Jordan (from 1985 on)...

Tiger Woods is the most dominating athlete I've ever seen. As a matter of fact, he's the most dominating athlete I've ever heard of.

If you don't think it's Tiger, then who get your vote??

Federer.
I'm still not sure which one, but those are the obvious two choices.

Yeah Federer is amazing. Played and followed Tennis most of my life and I really thought nobody would touch Sampras for a while. Roger will have it done soon.

Two thoughts.

Doesn't Tiger have the considerable edge because he beats almost ALL of the top ranked players over 4 days in order to win a tourney? Along with the fact that he that there's really no weak area of his game and he wins in all conditions from Augusta to St. Andrews.

&

I haven't followed tennis closely in some time and while I know we have some future HOF'ers out on tour (and a few in the making if they don't let the fact that they're going to get "Jordan'ed" a lot by Tiger over their careers) how strong is the men's scene? Is Roger really beating anyone, or is it a case of weak competition? Not to take away anything from him, even if they are weak, they're still the best and he annihilates them all.

I looked up and didn't see the bottom of your post. People do have a tendency to forget Wayne. But I would argue that while he made others better, he had AMAZING talent around him on those Oiler teams. Kuri, Messier, Fuhr to name a few. And they were still good/great without him. Unlike anyone Jordan ever played with. Still top 10 at least.

Top 10?? Maybe. I'm American and I agree with one of my favorite writers when he says that American soccer is a great sport for those who suck at other sports because so much of it is really just running around. Not to say that they aren't athlete's, but besides scoring, there have to be other areas (goal tending, defense) that must require skill. I just wouldn't know how to measure them if my life depended on it.

No disrespect intended to football players who have skills. They know who they are

In no particular order here is my top 10:

Jordan
Ali
Jim Brown
Federer
Woods
Gretzsky
Owens
Ruth
Thorpe
Nicklaus

In a couple years I'm pretty sure Woods and Federer will be the one and two on that list, even ahead of Jordan. Sid the Kid will also be on that list, possibly higher than The Great One himself.

1988 slam dunk competition in Chicago. Jordan needed I believe at least a 49.7 to tie Nique' and missed the first run at it, and of course nailed the 2nd.

Haven't seen it since, and won't watch it again

Good call on Crosby. What are the odds that Pittsburgh ended up with him and Mario?? It was Mario's karma I tell you.

Tiger may or may not be a great athlete but that is something we will never know since he plays glorified lawn darts for a living. Don't get me wrong, I think golf is difficult, but so is croquet.

Left off the list:
Rickie Henderson
If you don't know about him you have no idea of what an athlete is.

I get the idea the argument here is more so who was/is the most dominant in their sport.
I also think that one of the reasons Tiger is so much better than everyone else is because he's a phenomenal athlete, especially when compared to his lazy-ass peers.

"Today I am the greatest of all time".

Later that night Ryan goes off for his 7th no hitter at 44 and upstages him. Poor Ricky. The greatest lead off hitter ever by far, the greatest base stealer ever, by far, and all anyone remembers him for (for the most part) is that he was the first athlete to talk about himself in the 3rd person.

"Ricky is going to do for Ricky, what Ricky needs to do".

I LOVED Ricky Henderson.

I want to nominate Steve Prefontaine for the top 10.

At one point he held the American record in every single running event and did this before the age of 24 when he died.
If he hadnt died at such a young age, he would have been a multi-medal winner at a few olympics and be a household name.

And Nolan Ryan was marginally better than an average pitcher for 25 years. Oddly enough, that and a whole pile of meaningless stats gets you into the hall. Who knew?

jewunit: the quote from the first post was this:
"dominating athlete I've ever seen"

We'll never know since he hasn't tackled an athletic endeavor
