verm barrier?

Ok so the John Allen strain is the fastest colonizing strain that i have ever witnessed. I inocculated some on 9/11 and after three day the myc has grown out of the top on one of the jars. Do i need to put a layer of dry verm on top of it? I do NOT want to see a contamination so im willing to do almost anything.
Also, I inoculated a B+ strain into another four jars and so far i have NO growth at all, not even a small speck.I dont think i did anything wrong because i inoculated one of the test jars with 1/2 ja and 1/2 b+. only half of the cake has started colonizing. Could this be due to the fact that the b+ strain spores were dead(it gets up to the high 80's low 90's) or is it that i am just really really impatient? They probably stood in a bubble envelope for 2 hrs. But the JA strain seems to be working rather well.

The dry verm layer is something you put on before you sterilize your jars. If your mycelium has colonized the top of the jars, they're already more of less protected against contamination. Opening the jars before they've reached 100% colonization is a really good way to introduce contams, which are exactly what you're hoping to prevent by opening them... so it isn't a good idea.
On the B+ versus John Allen, were they both spore suspensions (as opposed to liquid cultures)? It's possible your John Allen did some germinating in the syringe and got a head start while the B+ didn't. Three days with no germination is pretty average. In weird cases it can take jars a week to germinate from spores.
There's also the possibility that your line of JA just germinates especially quickly, too, or that JA is overall a faster germinator*--there's likely to be a genetic factor involved.
In short, though: Patience. Spores don't die easily. Your JA just performed unusually well, and B+ (like all cubes, really) is hardy stuff.
*Germinater? Germinator? "Ah am zee germinator." Dunno.

If you are doing BRF cakes, then the verm layer should have been added before you sterilized. If you open it to add a verm layer, you risk adding contams yourself.

wait was i supposed to put a only verm layer over the cake? crap i guess i never got to that.
Does an ionizer help get rid of contams in the long run? I have a couple running in the house ( due to allergies) and i hope it helps

The verm filter isn't mandatory, it's just good practice. All PF-style teks tell you how and when to set it up.
The ionizer won't hurt, but don't expect it to make a world of difference either.
