Help for voice
    #7408250 - 09/14/07 09:20 AM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone know of anything that works better than gargling with warm salt water to help clear throat better for singing? It's scratchy, even warming up's not helping much. I tried laying off singing for a few days but still not at 100%.

yeah, feedback, the ultimate learning tool..
get like a delay pedal or something, listen to yourself, keep adjusting, etc

hydrate hydrate hydrate. drink glasses of water at least 3 hours before singing (it takes sometimes up to 2 hours for the vocal chords to start lubricating themselves, so that theory of drinking lubricating stuff and gargling right before singing is BS most of the time, I have learned this the hard way). what kind of singing are you doing? if it's too harsh of singing (screaming, growling), there may not be much you can do, vocal chords can only do so much.

always warm up, both in your upper and lower registers and everything in between, and always cool down your voice if you were singing for an extended period of time.

but most of all, keep yourself hydrated, for the most part, it's just good health, but you will notice a significant difference in your stamina, quality and vocal strength if you keep hydrated.

hope that helps.

also, about the vocal chords. stuff you drink or gargle doesn't actually come anywhere near your vocal chords, so it's technically pointless and not needed if you just keep well hydrated and warm up correctly, and if you're singing from your diaphragm instead of your throat (this is a big one).

Thanks Syle, actually you kind of nailed it. I have been learning some new stuff and it's a little lower than I normally sing (Anna Nalick, Bonnie Raitt). I didn't know about the hydrating though. Yes I always try to warm up, but never thought to cool down. What would you suggest, scales?

yeah, for cooling down, just hit both the high and low registers on some scales, nothing too difficult, and don't blare it out. but just work your voice down and down, quieter and quieter until you don't feel hoarse anymore. that should be good.

also, if you are hoarse at the start of a day, if you can manage it, try not speaking for the entire day unless forced otherwise. i am serious. it can do wonders to really help the vocals. also, violent coughing can damage the vocal chords.

i am getting into really nit picky stuff, but it all kind of matters if you are really taking singing seriously.

Yes I take singing very seriously. I do try the not talking but that's not easy for some people. Thanks bud. You know how it is always trying to push the range.

I've been taped a few times but nothing thats transferable to my computer. I don't think. I'd have to ask around. I sang at a friend's wedding recently (don't laugh!) and am not sure if they used a digital camera or not.

Recently met a guitar player and was thinking about a little collaboration then his hand got broke, so that's on hold. Hopefully he'll be able to play again, I haven't talked to him since it happened.

And yes I'll hear someone singing when their voice is about gone and think "Please stop! You are doing more damage than you know, it's not like a musical instrument that you can replace!"
